In terms of the critical path method, how are the trades paid if each trade acts independantly?
In other words there is no bid package for the whole project so how do they get paid?????

CPM shows the relation Betwen activities and the time it takes them to be completed; establishing a sequencing and defining a path of activities that are critical for the successful completion of the project.
For this test you dont have go deep in detailed CPM programing; just know the concepts asociated with it.

The contractor is reponsible of paying the subs he hires to perform the work.
The contractor can be selected by the owner early at the begining of the project or after bidding.
He is the "entity"reponsible for paying the trades.

On a fast-track project it usually involves stage-bidding. Sometimes this involves 20 to 30 seperate contracts so it is impossible to nail down a fixed price. Generally a Construction Manager is hired to deal with all of the coordination involved.

First, CPM has nothing to do with payment. It seems that the OP is mixing up issues.
CPM is merely a planning & scheduling tool and independent of delivery method.
Fast track projects, must have a CM. The CM will develop and coordinate the multiple prime contracts.
As implied by the name, when you have multiple primes, each has a contract directly with the owner and payment to each is handled just like any general contractor.
