Well, the exam went okay for me (Took it last weekend). Didn’t really walk out thinking I just walked out of a train wreck, so I hope that’s a good sign…but you never know..
From what I recollect at this point, here are the areas of study I’d recommend if you happen to run into a similar version of the exam I took:
1. Understand what the differences and details are between Mediation, Arbitration, & Litigation (AHPP was helpful for this info).
2. Project Delivery Methods: Know details about all methods, and how they differ from each other (Again..AHPP was helpful here too).
3. Know the basics about the LEED program, and general details.
4. Brush up on your ADA, as far as disabled access & exiting requirements are concerned.
5. Read up on Historic Preservation( per the website indicated below).
6. I had about 3-5 questions based on the MEEB book, 9th Edition (Study material for the ME exam)
7. 40-50% of my questions were straight out of the AIA doc’s A201, B141, & C141.
Understand how the above documents are affected by components related to ‘limited liability’.
8. Study the differences between different types of ownership (i.e. Eminant Domain, Deed Restrictions, Convenants, etc.)
9. Study Programming and all details related to this process.
10. Know how to tell the difference between different street types (i.e. Expressway, Arterial, etc.)
11. 3-5 questions related to IBC.
12. Know main differences between Zoning ordinances & Building Codes
After reviewing my lasts posts on prep’g for this exam (which was another re-take for me of course..), I realized that the single most important materials to study for this exam were actually the AIA contracts. Oddly enough, like most other people have claimed, my exam was based on at least 40-50% of info directly out of the AIA doc’s….
Study Materials, in the order I used them:
- ALS – Pre-Design 1 & 2 (2 books): I pretty much just skimmed through these in about 2 weeks and left it at that.
- ARCHIFLASH cards for Pre-Design, 2005 copyright version: I took about 1 week to skim over these.
- AHPP (Architects Handbook of Professional Practice, 12th edition, edited by David Haviland): In studying this hefty book, I basically took the areas of study per ARE 3.1 Guidelines for Pre-Design, and I went through the ENTIRE table of contents on AHPP and compared every single chapter and section to see if it were appropriate to review based on the areas of study denoted in the ARE 3.1 Guidelines. The overall period took me about 1 week to study this book too, based on the designate chapters I referred to. And one item that I HAVEN'T seen anyone here do yet, is this.....I basically saved all the Chapters in AHPP that were directly/ indirectly related to the AIA doc's mentioned below, and I read each of the designated chapters 1 by one, right before I read the appropriate AIA doc (This is where I mixed studying the AHPP & AIA doc's together). And I think that helped a whole lot..it was kind of a pre-introduction to what each of the AIA doc's were focused on...and IMO, it was a good way to go for me at least.
- AIA Documents A201, B141, C141, & D200: I spent about 1 day per contract review (4-5 days total), and only read the annotated versions.
- Website on Historical Preservation: http://www.cr.nps.gov/hps/tps/standguide/
- ARCHIFLASH card for CD’s & Services, 2005 copyright version: I took 2 days to skim over these, seeing that I already passed this exam back in 2006.
- I also checked out this website for about 2 hours before leaving for my exam...which has do with different housing types.:http://architecture.about.com/od/periodsstyles/ig/House-Styles/index.htm
Well, at this point it’s just another waiting game, as usual…
I’ll re-post when the time comes to do so..

Dude! You always have the best summaries! *copy-paste-save*
I'm going to guess that your version will probably be what I get when I do my retake in July. Mine was a little different with a huge emphasis on programming. In fact, some of the questions seemed verbatim from the Kaplan 2006 Pre-Design book.
(Note: this comment is after-the-fact. I took PD cold..and failed).
I like your AHPP suggestion. Like ME, your post will be my study guide

Again, another nice response out of IW...much appreciated.
And maybe when you do re-take PD in a few months, this guide will get you through, similar to how you approached ME....
If I can't help myself (in passing these exams quickly)...I'm glad I can help SOMEONE...

Well...it's been about 1.5 weeks, just got my letter yesterday, and I'll be back here in August!...They dinged my on 1 area this time, as opposed to my 3 areas last time..(I guess that's an improvement)
Oh well, next time, I'm only going to study for 2 weeks, and then just take it.
Good luck everyone!...Onward to the next exam (BD/MM)..can't quit now !...
I'll be closer by 2008...even if it kills me...lol!

WTF? Are you sure you didn't piss someone off at NCRAP? Again, "You wus robbed!"
Doesn't change anything on my end as it relates to using your study list. My retake will be in July, so I plan on hitting the books in June on this one.

yeah, I think so too...but oh well. Next time I study for this thing, I'm using my same study guide and only giving myself 2 weeks.
Taking this a 3rd time will be it for me...or so I hope.

Good Luck!

Sorry about your results but glad to hear I'm not alone.
I'm preparing for my first (and hopefully last) try at PD. I've passed CD's and SP so far and have to re-take ME. I was totally unprepared for that test although I studied for a month.

| Hey Quick - I think you were dead on with your use of AHPP - people don't talk about it enough - i didn't read it before my test but found a copy in the library the day after and really wished i had read it. I am sure I will be taking it again soon. the questions just seemed be so abstract from the facts. these what if scenarious were difficult. good luck for next time. thanks for the post. ..

What amazes the HELL out of me, is that this post is still being reviewed by others....though it's origin is back from March of 07'....
And I'm actually studying for my re-take right now.....so it just blows my mind, in a righteous way...
Maybe I should ask the ARE forum admin to 'sticky' this post to the top of this forum.....
Anyone behind me on this one?...

I would support that - What are you doing to study this time around? How have you changed your method? I have been thinking a lot about this since it is such a hard test to take. Also, you seem to have a good grasp of these exams - do you have any recommendations or a post of the same ilk regarding how to study for mm? percentages of time per what material type and what books are absolutely neccessary. Thanks for any advice. When are you taking pd again?

The only things I'm doing differently this time around are the following:
1. Attend AIA Seminar for PD (Done)
2. Take the last 2 days before my exam, and surf the PD forum post commentaries, and research ALL of the topics mentioned from others exam experience. Doing this will only broaden my horizons for the wide range of topics that this exam covers.
3. GO into the exam with the firm confidence that I know my ***.....after everything is said and done....and then pray to the heavens above that I hope to finally pass this bitch ass exam....
But as far as the other advice is concerned...I'll have to check my old posts, to see if I can find something helpful for you.....
Hope that helps...

Quick,
Have you narrowed down on which chapters of AHPP to concentrate. My focus this weekend has also come down to AHPP and History.

Quik,
Thank you for the info. I am taking this exam in a few weeks.
I wanted to ask if you purchsed the ALS pre-design books 1-2 from kaplan?
I did a search on ALS study guides and only kaplan shows up.
thanks again,

Congrats on getting a sticky, my brother!
For other readers, Quik is on the money with his PD study, breakdown, and commentary. I COULD NOT have passed it on my retake without his help as I was floundering on this one.

i took the pre-design 3 weeks ago, just got the results saying i passed. i went in pretty confident with the material, but came out of the test with absolutely no idea how i did. get familiar with the material, and use common sense and don't get frustrated with the trick questions. just understand the stuff that keeps coming up, like the FAR for example. the test is a joke. all the questions are worded in intentionally confusing ways. they are nothing like the practice tests. it is multiple guess, not multiple choice. one question i remember was completely impossible to answer. i'm tempted to rewrite it here, but won't because who knows what NCARB would do to me. but they need to be held accountable for their gross abuse of power. this simply is a ridiculous test and they know it.
in short, study til the matierial repeats itself and you know it. then go and do your best. you'll pass.

QSilver and Rake
Thanks for the post, I just finished my CD exam this late afternoon and now get ready to move on to PD. I search the forum and come accross your post. I'm sorry about your result, you seemed so prepare about your PD. That make me feel so worry about my CD. I studied for about three and a half weeks on CD and feel so confident about it- kist like Rake. I walked out the testing room with a good thought that I'm going to make... never know untill I got my result right? The Kaplan CD-rom practice and after each lession quiz makes a lot of sences, however, the actual exam they phase the questions to hard to understand.
Rake-- I hope you pass the exam
Good luck you all!

QUIKSILVER,
First of all, Thanks for the PD exam prep. Information, I just got green light to start taking my exams and my first choice to take is Pre-Design and I was thinking to buy the Kaplan study package for this particular division, and I would like to get your opinion about this material.
Do you think is Worth buying, I heard very good things about it.
Do you think it will cover must of the material you are describing in the forum.
Thank you

I took the CD and BD/MM exams and can't decide on what to take next: PD or ME.
It would be great to get several opinions based on experience...

My first multiple choice was PD and failed. After that I took GS, LF, ME, MM and recently CD (haven't received CD results yet). I was suggested to leave PD for last which is a compilation of everything plus more. My suggestion to you would be to leave PD for last. Other have approached it differently with much better results than mine.
