I am looking for some feedback regarding some sample test questions from the ARE Study Guide.
Question 1: Buildings more than 40 years old are most likely to be at variance with present-day standareds in which of teh followint areas?
I. Dead-end corridor lengths
II. Size of toilet-room stalls
III. Ceiling Heights
IV. Adequacy of Insulation
Choices:
- I and III only
- II, III, and IV only
- I, II, and IV only
- I, II, III, and IV
The answer is I, II, and IV only
Can someone please explin why a Ceiling Heights would not be allowed to be "at variance"?
Question 2: Which type of educational facility encompasses the largest service area or population?
- Primary School
- Magnet School
- Middle School
- High School
The correct answer is Magnet School.
I would have thought High School would have been the correct choice. Why is Magnet School the answer here?

1) I think you're misunderstanding the question. It's asking what is likely to not comply with current codes. Ceiling heights have been consistent.
2) Magnet schools draw from a wide region, hence the name.

I guess I am still not understanding what is being asked.

. . . pretty much a doomed effort if I can't even understand the question.

| It's basically asking what code provisions from 40 years ago are more stringent now.

The question is asking which elements of the structure, which was erected before today's codes were in effect, are likely not to comply.
Choices a, b, & d refer to life safety issues such as egress (length of dead end corridor) or energy issues (insulation) or occupancy types which require specific toilet counts for men and women. Choice C is not referring to overhead clearance but more generally to ceiling height - I agree that if the choice was overhead clearance all answers would be applicable.
And I still think - since this is an older building - it is reasonable to assume that the ceiling is higher than what's typical today.
Thanks Coach for pointing out my previously poorly worded reasoning.

While house hunting (8 years ago), came across an ad that fit our need, so we visted the house (intrigued about a 1500 sf patio enclosure in the ad). The "patio" , was bascically a bootlegged shed roof affair with bug screens. Trouble was, that the weekend warrior who "invented" this thing, simply ran the shed out to a 66" or so plate line, complete with 4 ft high door and window heads.
The seller swore they had a permit. Nice.
