Greetings to those of you that are still in PD study mode...
Quik is in the house for the next 2 weeks, to see if this exam can finally be dealt with in a righteous manner..
Just got done with ME, and I'm not sure how I did, but now it's time to focus on PD.....for a 3rd/ 4th time.....
Any thoughts on how I should spend the next 2 weeks?....
I already have a game plan, but I'd like to know what other people think too....
I think most of my focus will be on practice exams, the AHPP, and flash cards...
Any advice is welcome,
Cheers,
Q..

Quick,
I just followed you here from the BD/MM forum. I will be testing for PD in 3 weeks. This is my first attempt and from what I understand, a heavy dose of CD concepts , some history and sustainability along with Ballast and other study guides should suffice as it would again be a test of knowledge and interpretation than actual content. While nervously waiting for my MM results, I'm trying hard to focus on this test. Please post your thoughts as you proceed with this one. It was very valuable to read your post on the MM forum.
Good luck to you !

I know how you feel, as I'm waiting for my ME results too....but I've been in this game long enough to know that the past can't change, so you gotta move on to the next challenge....
I see that you have a good understanding of what is needed to absorb for the exam......so..........Speaking of something valuable....here's a shortcut to my post exam synopsis from the beginning of 2007.....
http://www.areforum.org/forums/forum1/22492.html
It's helped many candidates pass this exam, and some still use it as a study guide....
.......So Check it out, and you might find that it suites your study needs as well.....
Cheers to future success,

Lets hope you're right......
Most of my study for this re-take will just be review of concepts that I'm already familar with....
Cheers to future success,

Hope you pass this time around. My study strategy has been the same.
This time I read Ballast, and took the time audiorecord all the PD Archiflash and listened to them week after week to and from work. I divided the 5 categories and listened to one per week.
Like you, I took as many practice exams as possible. Retook the same after two weeks and kept score of my progress. Its funny how you can fail in the same questions the same way time after time. Also got togethe with another candidate everyother weekend and studied for 3 hours analizing one category per session.
Keep up the spirit, you're almost there.

I am confuse with this one... is really that difficult? The questions are very tricky or something? It is more focused on concept or details?
I am study Kaplan (ALS), ArchiFlash, and I have PASS all but ME (and this one and BT)
I PASS CD in August, so that material is fresh to me. I have study for 2 weeks and planing to take it in one more. What do you think? Is this fine, or am I making a mistake with this one?

For me this one has been very confusing. It's all based on concept. The questions, in part, are very tricky. You must REALLY READ AND RE-READ the questions. This last time I only had 10 minutes left to review the marked questions. (Still waiting for the results). In average it took me approximate 1 to 1.5 minute per question. If you can also use Ballast besides the material you have, it'll complement your study.
Best Wishes.

orlo, other then the actual "Pre-Design" section of Ballast, what other sections would you recommend me reading? I've already taken CD and MM, but, not ME, so, what else should I focus on?
Thanks

I read and compiled many of the information here and in the FTP; example: Historic Preservation, its variations, do's and don'ts. There were several of these on past exams. (sometimes tricky)
Review some LF concepts, just the basic. (if you haven't taken this one yet).
Best Wishes;

Quik,
If you've taken this one multiple times, perhaps you already know the content and you need to work on general reading comprehension for the questions. Reading them multiple times won't do you much good if you misinterpret it each time.
Perhaps on the practice questions, try asking yourself, "what is the key concept they want me to understand?", "how would I ask a question on this?"
For example, question 1 from NCARB study guide for Pre-Design:
Buildings more than 40 years old are most likely to be at variance with present day standards in which of the following areas (dead-end corridor lengths, size of toilet-room stalls, ceiling heights, adequacy of insulation).
So here they are asking about several things: what covered in present day standards? and what was covered 40 years ago? Some knowledge of how buildings have changed over the past 40 years can be helpful in guessing this - improved safety (dead end), improved accessiblity (toilet room sizes), improved energy efficiency (insulation). So that leaves the ceiling - I personally don't remember if it is included in the code or not, thinking not, but I also think of the high ceilings in older buildings and guess that they would probably be acceptable to present day standards.
How would you ask the question about improvements to the code? Are there aspects this question missed? Are there other options that could make the same point (eg. alarm systems, ramps, glazing)?
Don't just focus your study on the one answer to the one question. Break it apart and put it back together again in your own way. Perhaps you could find a study partner, write questions for each other and trade. The act of writing the questions is study in and of itself.

Q;
Get also familiar with the NCARB Mock exams that are available online, (Both for 3.1 and 4.0), It'll refresh your memory as to the type of questions you'll. Under the 4.0 do the PPP and SP mock exams.
