Saturday, April 9th, 2005, I received my final two results, exactly 2 years, 17 weeks, and 5 days after taking my first exam.
Needless to say I got sidetracked at various times. I took my first two within a month, the third 5 months after that, and so on. Without a doubt, my biggest regret in the whole process is not staying on track and taking them sooner. A close second would be taking the graphic portions last.
What follows is kind of a final summary of the experience. For those who bore easy, you may want to stop here and move on to another post. I write it in the hopes that someone may find some of it useful.
For those just beginning, in the process, or just considering taking the ARE, I commend you for your effort and decision to take the step towards licensure. It is not an easy road. If you feel like the whole thing is just beating you down, know that you are not alone; there are so many out there, particularly who participate in this forum, that are going through the exact same thing. Discipline, focus, and courage will see you through.
I hope that you have come to this forum not only to reap the benefit of the experiences of those post here, but also to contribute yourself. Every bit helps – sometimes just saying “good job” or offering tips on a re-take can make a difference to someone else taking the exam.
I came to this forum in July of 2004 and have been posting since. I have no idea who started it, or who runs it, but I want to thank them for giving me the opportunity to learn so much from the members who post here. This site is probably the best single resource for those studying for the ARE, and I commend our hosts for creating and maintaining it.
Ok, here goes – my final ARE Synopsis:
Order I took the exams:
1. Construction Documents (CD)
2. Building Design/Materials and Methods (MM)
3. Mechanical and Electrical Systems (ME)
4. Pre-Design (PD)
5. General Structures (GS)
6. Lateral Forces (LF)
7. Site Planning (SP)
8. Building Planning (BP)
9. Building Technology (BT)
Relative difficulty for me, easiest to hardest:
1. Building Technology (BT)
2. Site Planning (SP)
3. Building Planning (BP)
4. Construction Documents (CD)
5. Pre-Design (PD)
6. General Structures (GS)
7. Lateral Forces (LF)
8. Building Design/Materials and Methods (MM)
9. Mechanical and Electrical Systems (ME)
If I were to do it all over again, the manner and order by which I would have taken the exams:
1. CD (to get used to format)
2. BT, SP, and BP in same week (to get them over with and wait for results)
3. ME (one of hardest, early in case I failed)
4. MM
5. GS
6. LF (immediately following GS)
7. PD (good summary exam)
Study Materials
I would recommend treating each exam as it’s own entity to determine the best possible study resources, but there are a few that will be helpful for multiple exams:
Architectural Graphic Standards (or AGS).
You can purchase it from many places, Amazon included. I would highly recommend you obtain a copy as it is also an excellent reference for daily practice.
Building Construction Illustrated and A Visual Dictionary of Architecture by Francis D.K. Ching:
If you're just getting into the material, I would recommend these. Informative, well illustrated, and easy to read, I used them to study for all multiple choice exams.
ARE Solutions by Professor Dorf.
An absolute must have for the graphic portions. You can find it here: http://www.are-solutions.com/
Some helpful links for the ARE study guides and resources:
Archvoices: Wonderful website, and an incredible resource for young architecture professionals. Check out the section on “Licensure,” particularly the “ARE Study Materials” section. http://www.archvoices.org/
The old standard “ALS” study guides, which stood for “Architectural Licensing Seminars,” now owned by Kaplan:
http://www.kaplanaecarchitecture.com/
The "Ballast" guides, referring to the books by David Kent Ballast. There are two volumes: Structural Topics and Non-structural Topics. They are published by PPI. You can purchase these from Amazon and other sources. Some swear by them, others question their accuracy and usefulness. For more information, look here: http://ppi2pass.com/catalog/servlet/MyPpi_pg_archid.html
Archiflash cards are also very useful. Check them out here:
http://www.archiflash.com/afinfo.html
David Thaddeus has been kind enough to post his wonderful "cheat sheet" for the structures portions. Find it here: http://www.areforum.org/generalstructures.htm
And of course, NCARB itself publishes study guides. Find them here: http://www.ncarb.org/Publications/arestudyguides.html
If you are interested in the above sources I would first recommend you attempt to either borrow them or purchase them used, since as new they can be quite pricey. Generally speaking, older versions from the past few years are generally adequate.
One of the best sources for info is the ARE Forum itself. Don’t forget to check out the "Uploads" section of the site. TONS of great info here: ftp://aretest:upload(AT)webbcomm.biz/
My General Recommendations
1. Use multiple sources for content.
2. Draw from your professional experience.
3. Do not underestimate any exam.
4. Do not overestimate any exam.
5. Get a good night’s sleep before the exam.
6. Relax.
My Synopses
Below are links to the “synopses” I posted to the ARE Forum (areforum.org) following my exams. If you want a single document with all of the MC portions, see the document called “ARE MC Roundup” in the "General (2 or more exams)" folder on the ARE ftp site.

Why did I write these?
(If any of the text below looks familiar, I originally posted much of this in a discussion about the falling ARE pass rates)
I created these synopses for two reasons: first, to serve as a record of my exam in the case that I failed and would have to take it again. Second, to help others focus their studies.
Why did I bother with the latter reason?
My summaries were always meant to promote study. As such, they were often quite detailed. In my mind, someone who takes the time to sift through all the things I wrote and review the material will (hopefully) gain knowledge in the process. My advice has always stressed more over less study, more sources over fewer, commanding grasp of the material instead of transient memorization. I have even been indirectly criticized for insinuating that certain exams were too difficult, or that the resources I used were irrelevant or excessive. Good preparation for the exam can also yield good preparation for practice.
The way I look at it is this: the exam is shrouded in some mystery as to content and evaluation criteria. I do not believe this is fair. I think the subject areas (not content per se) should be more accessible and I wanted do my part to make it so. I don't think that studying blindly helps anyone. I also think the ambiguous evaluation criteria is unacceptable but unfortunately have no power over that.
I must admit that I have somewhat of an ulterior motive with respect to all this, and that is to advance the quality of our profession by encouraging study and fostering camaraderie among us instead of singularity. As far as I'm concerned, the latter leads to the kind of mistrust and undercutting I see in our profession. The former, I believe, can better lead us to the respect and relevance for which we strive.
My general recommended approach to study for the ARE, in less than 200 words:
Decide.
Commit to investing the time necessary to properly prepare for and take each exam.
Prepare.
Do not underestimate – nor overestimate – the difficulty of any division. The purpose of registration is to safeguard public health, safety, and welfare. Remember this when anticipating exam content and choosing study materials.
Collect.
Seek the most pertinent resources for each exam. Listen to the experiences and suggestions of your predecessors, as their insight can be invaluable. Consider using multiple sources for each subject, as investigating a topic from multiple perspectives can develop a more holistic and meaningful understanding of its content. For the graphic divisions, two things are essential: practice with the test software and the ability to follow directions.
Learn.
Devote the time necessary to study; schedule if necessary. Begin with concepts to understand specifics, then examine specifics to reinforce understanding of concepts. Draw from your professional experiences to engage the material, and incorporate this knowledge into your professional practice. Compare thoughts with others. Strive to develop meaningful and useful understanding instead of transient knowledge.
Share.
Reflect upon your experience and share your insight with others. Work to create a knowledge/support community that will become a resource for you and those that follow.
Final Comments
I want to thank the creators of this forum and everyone who posts here. I have learned a tremendous amount from you all. I particularly want to thank the following for your support, feedback, contributions, and insights: CD, craftsman, donna, cmine, ash, Scully504, Test-Taken, teklhammer, Carlos, sue, Kellhammer, red, m3, john_t, ColdLamper, Professor Dorf, David Thaddeus, idolines, Spellcaster, Wrecktangle, Aglaia, NitroNate, sdoyle1127, Lucky Charm, RK, dlp designs, Soconos3, Kevin67, Opal, missladiva, gvargas, Dzine, TurboJugend, kim, and all those I missed.
Good luck in all of your current and future endeavors.
- Eric

eric B,
I knew that soon enough I will see your "final" post.
Congratulations!
There was no doubt in my mind that you'd pass the last two, (I think that deep down inside you knew that yourself).
I am sitting and waiting for mine to come in sometime in the next two-three weeks.
Don't make this post your last one, your participation and guidance is needed and will be greatly appreciated by others.
Good Luck!

EricB That's terrific! I knew you were going to pass-- however, it's very nice to have the hard copy result. Have a wonderful weekend Enjoy it! And yes, don't leave the site. Even though I finished recently, I intend to stay around to help/encourage others. Your comments are always a pleasure to read and I think they are very helpful strategies for people new to ARE. It's such a big hurdle to complete this 9 part beast, and you are huge part of why this forum is successful and why I want to continue to be a part of it.
Congratulations!!!!

Cheers Ericb!! I'm following close behind you with just a couple of more exams to go.
Your contibutions here are legendary. In fact I would recommend that this post become a sticky and live near the top due to its road map content for newbies to the ARE process.
Now if you had just done a synopsis for BP we'd be all set. Thankfully the couple other exams I need to take you've written about. I find your synopsis' required reading for any exam.
Congrats! If you ever get up to Michigan look me up, I'll buy you a beer.
Take care,
Nitro

hey Eric! Congratulations! Although many of us here already said it before, I want to extend my thanks to YOU! (and I never have thought that I would be on your "thankyou list"! ) In effect, this forum is great in camaraderie, it actually had helped me to reflect, at some point, of my past short-comings in the profession, given me a little "light" (hopefully) of the future... helped me re-centering, re-focusing, and of course, dealing with the exams... well, enough of the rambling... but what I meant to say was, one way or another along our way to becoming an "Architect", we have had good and bad experiences which among the many competitive environment, very few occassion would we come together, share insights, support each other like we do so here. It's a bit sad that this didn't happen more often in the "real" but instead in the "virtual". Nonetheless, this site is powerful in such a positive way. I'm also glad that it exists.
Eric, rarely had I "heard" (or even more rare had I met) someone with such clear-headed integrity as you, and I want to congratulate you as well on that. I cannot agree more that if we've commited to a profession that is respected by the society at large, we have to lift up to that challenge. I've recently passed by some gorgeously built houses, only 5/6 years old, but already had their tilted retaining wall which raked apart the joint columns, big cracks at the mortar joints, and with watermarks and salt all over those nicely layed bricks, no weephole, no flashing, no nothing. Frankly, I was just sadden by the sight. Don't understand how someone could be so irresponsible to build such things, get their 1/2 million $, and left the owners with such pathetic-looking houses a fews years later. Anyway, now I'm rambling again... but you get the point, as one of the future architects, I see I got a lot to do on my plate.
Well, it's time to go back to my MEEB!!
O, and thanks for your response to my question about sequencing my 4 exams. Congrats again, and good luck to you Eric.

Well summarized, Eric.....congratulations!! I think your words will be an inspiration to many, I hope so.....you have successfully taken a lot of the mystery out of the ARE, and put things into a recognizable perspective for all to learn from.
I hope we never have to miss you!! Stay in touch with all of us here, on this great site. I look forward to hearing more wisdom from you.
Thanks again.....and make a good architect, now.

Thank you all SO MUCH for your wonderful comments, I am humbled.
NitroNate, per your request, I've gone ahead an added a BP summary.
Sue - the world will always be filled with ugliness and those who perpetuate it, but if you can bring beauty to even a very small part, that's still a part that will have the benefit of your sensitivity, and the world will be that much better for it.
As long as I can be useful to the forum I'll stick around and pop in when possible... I at least need to be around to congratulate the rest of you upon your successful completions!

A big and well deserved CONGRATULATIONS!!! I am very happy for you.
Eric Don’t beat yourself up for taking longer than you would have liked. I believe things always happen for a good reason and the timing of this is probably just perfect for you (sometimes we just can't see it right away). I can tell you with certainty that your timing has been perfect for a few people I know whom you have helped tremendously and many others who will continue to benefit from the long hours you have put in to your notes and your enormous generosity of sharing them and your thoughts with the forum. I agree with Sue that “It's a bit sad that this didn't happen more often in the "real" but instead in the "virtual" world.”
I hope you are celebrating this weekend……. If anyone deserves it is you !!!! I propose a “virtual” toast in your name
Carmen
PS: By the way, I hope this is not the “fin” but a beautiful “principio” (beginning) of the rest of a very successful career for you.

first off congratulations! if anyone deserves the have the honor of being called "architect" it is you. it has been a great pleasure to read your posts whether the were about studying techniques or about your outlook for the profession. when I see your name in a thread I knew I would be getting valuable information I could use. I have yet to start the exams (some procrastination on my part, part work, part addition I’m building myself on my home) but when I do ( I hope by end of summer) I know where I will look for my staring point and inspiration, an ericb post. I wish u the best of luck in all that u do and again congratulations!!!!
p.s. I hope you'll stick around awhile the board could always u a few more "mentors"

Congratulations! Your summaries have been incredibly helpful to me.
I think you've done a great service here. Instead of giving us an easy short cut by telling us exactly what answers to regurgitate in response to specific questions, you have lead us to resourses that allow us to study effectively and become better architects.
If NCARB were smart, they would hire you to make this whole process more rewarding for future architects... but I would never wish that fate on you

Eric,
I said it already in another post, but let me make it official here:
A big "ditto" from me to all the comments here.
You, Eric, are who I want to be when I get my license ! Seriously, although the way I phrased that is in jest, you certainly have had a profound effect on the way I view things. Your high levels of integrity, commitment, awesome communication skills and overall viewpoint are all things I aspire to attain.
If anyone deserved those last 2 pass letters it was you! I am so incredibly happy for you.
Good luck with whatever is next for you, and know that all the effort you put in to helping and guiding others has already and will continue to serve as an invaluable service to current and future ARE candidates, and the Architects they become.

All of your comments are way too kind. Thank you.
Lisa: Until yesterday I had created a synopsis of only 7 of the exams... I left out CD and BP. Since it was still fairly fresh in my mind I went back and created one for BP. CD is the first I took, and it's been so long (and pre-3.0) that I don't think I'd have much to contribute, except to know A201 & B141 inside out (use the AIA Commentary editions), study ADAAG, and read a good portion of the Handbook. I also found ALS and Archiflash helpful as I recall. Sorry I can't be of more assistance... I'm confident that the others on this forum, however, will be able to help you out.
