Has anyone compared the ARE 3.1 study materials to the ARE 4.0 study materials by Ballast for non-structural topics? It seems as if there are large differences in the content of the basic study guide (when I browsed the table of contents on the PPI website)... However, there has been much discussion that the content is so similar (for multiple choice topics), that one can easily use ARE 3.1 study materials for the 4.0. Comments? Recommendations? Thanks for the input!

I have not looked at the 4.0 material, but I would say that the 3.1 material would be fine. The advantage to the 4.0 material would be that it is formatted all in one book with the information for the test. Using 3.1 material you would have to look through the old test books and study from multiple sources.
I am willing to bet that the Kaplan 4.0 is the same material almost word for word as Kaplan 3.1 books. With the exception you may need to do a little skimming in the 3.1 books to find the content you are looking for.
Try using the search to find more topics.
Good luck!

Thanks! I've decided to dive on in and purchase 4.0 materials. I think I'll gather peace of mind studying from the "correct" materials!

I took the building design exam on 8.14.08. I studied extensively the Kaplan 3.1 guide, flash cards, CD, questions and answers book. I also bought the 4.0 vignette book. In my opinion there was a lot of multiple choice questions that was not covered by the 3.1 material. However, I did OK in the vignette portion. I'll be surprised if I do pass the exam.
In summary I recommend to buy study materials related to the exam version you plan to take.

In summary I recommend to buy study materials related to the exam version you plan to take. Let's think about this a sec... WHY? Other than editing their books to match the blending of material (vignettes with MC, GS & LF together, etc) what do you think the publishers did? Where do you think they get their information? I can assure you that they know no more than anyone else. I can guarantee that the 4.0 materials in no substantive way different from the 3.1 material. And, I might add, I'm very comfortable saying so even though I have never so much as held a kaplan, ballast, archiflash, ppi, or any other product other than Dorf's SOLUTIONS. Have faith in the knowledge that any publisher claiming "ALL NEW FOR 4.0" is lying through their inky teeth.
