Any comments on how LEED test compares (level of difficulty) to the ARE?  After passing the ARE, I don't know why this is freaking me out so much.....

I would get acquainted with the USGBC site, the LEED reference guide, and read over different case studies of LEED certified buildings.

Other good websites are:

http://greensource.construction.com/

http://leedbootcamp.com

http://usgbc.org

First you need to register at the usgbc website.  Its free, just creat a user name and password.  THen you can schedule.

Under the LEED AP tab at the top it explains everything about candidate eligibility and has tons of downloads with sample questions and templates.  And you can buy the guidelines from that site.

The CO guide is no longer available electronically.  I 'm guessing because of the flagrant abuse (copying, ignoring copyright law..) by users - including forum users.  Thanks for ruining it for us all - now I have to wait for the hard copy to arrive via snailmail.  ugh.

Anyway - to buy it you can try:

http://www.usgbc***.com/resources/leed-studyguide.html

just replace the *** with the name of the state (in which denver is located) spelled out

You might want to check out my forum post "How to study for LEED". I passed with a 184 (about 94%), and I felt like the materials and topic I covered were right on.

Hi. I was wondering if you could tell me if for the test you memorized all the rates in the book, for example oall the refrigerant rates and things like that. Or Do I need just to know the equations? Thanks. :)

I did memorize every parameter as it applied to defining whether or not a set of circumstances would or wouldn't satisfy a credit. It is often the exception to the rule that gets emphasis here.

I'm not sure what you are referring to in relationship to refrigerants...perhaps you want to know what % must meet CFC standards. If so, then yes you should know them.

Hope this was helpful. If not, please ask again.

Well. I was  refering more about all the rates used for calculations. For instance to calculate the AVERAGE REFRIGERANT ATMOSFERIC IMPACT you need to know the Refrigerant charge Rc. Do you need to know all those rates or they are normally given to you in the test? I assume one should learn the equations but all those rates and info for the equations are given to you, right? ...I hope!

I didn't run across any instances where those types of calculations were necessary. Define what you study by what does and doesn't qualify for a credit(s). Think thresholds and differences, rather than calculations apart from credit requirements. Imagine doing a project and having to figure out what aspects of your design(s) would move your sustainable agenda and credit achievement forward, rather than focusing on the calculations a contractor or engineer might be involved with.

Do NOT study the LEED 2.1 study guide. You will only confuse yourself. The 2.2 credits and requirements for credits differs significantly from 2.1, but not enough that you will be able to recall the updates once you have learned the old version.

LEED requires that you know how to use their system of credits, not that you be an expert on sustainability. Your knowledge of the SYSTEM and on how well you know the synergistic relationships between different sustainable strategies is of prime importance. Understand the strategies and how to achieve the credits, down to the level of exceptions to the rule for each and you will do fine. I found that making charts and diagrams for remembering the credits and how they were alike and different from one another helped me not only for the exam, but also in real application.

Hi, I read your blog. In your crib sheet, under Terms-8: reference standards to know, do you mean just know what they are or to read the whole standard? How deep do you need to understand/know those standards?

thanks

The LEED Professional Accreditation Study Guide and Practice Exam - LEED-NC version 2.2 Edition with EB & CI Quiz Questions from the USGBC CO Chapter offers a high-quality practice exam and lots of additional information on preparing for the exam and how to use the LEED Rating System effectively (including considerable content that is not available in either the Reference Guide or on the USGBC web site). The correct link to the CO chapter Study Guide page is:

http://www.usgbc***.com/resources/leed-studyguide.html

Note: Be sure to replace the three asterisks with "c o l o r a d o" -- no spaces, as the ARE Forum seems to have a problem displaying the name of that particular U.S. state)

It's kinda a given that the LEED exam is getting more and more difficult each go round, so when i heard that it was going to change in January, I registered to take it as soon as possible - which gave me 3 days to study.  I sat down with the book and my laptop, and transcribed the whole thing over 2 days (Saturday and Sunday.)  As a visual person with acute hand-eye relationships, I figured if i type i i'll recall it better. I wound up with 40 pages (at 10pt font) down from a 350 page book.  It was a headache and a classic case of cramming, but it worked - 179.

I would suggest you read the book first - give it an overview, don't study all the details, just to understand the overall layout and intention of the system - then dedicate specific time to go item by item.  Think of the way you best remember/memorize things and tailor your study to that method.

Pay attention to differences between the sub-points and the factors they influence - for example, Leed Credit A might be good for energy efficiency; Credit A.a might be good for human comfort.  They'll ask you pedantic crap like that.

Also be clear on when to use which LEED rating system (NC, CI, EB etc) and the process and information required for registering/ certifying - what do you need in order to start the registration process; what can you complete before the building is done and substantial completion achieved; etc.

Check the website for how to register and the items required for it.

Then rub the lucky buddha belly and rock in circles 6 times while facing south and drinking wine.  The wine might help :)

Congrats on passing!  Not to promoting cramming, did you just use the reference guide as your only study resource?  I'm scheduled to take the exam the end of February and have been compiling references and resources.  Thanks!

i used the reference guide and whatever other (free) links you get when googling "leed exams" and "leed study materials".  most of the study tests i got, including the one from the person in Denver, who teaches a course, were helpful but not entirely spot on.  the exam keeps getting re-written, so the more information you can expose yourself to, the better.  The questions are designed to be difficult to navigate, so you really have to go through the details of each point and requirement.  also - most of the study material i found was for LEED NC; i took the LEED CI exam; so some of the material was actually wrong for my exam.

Also, i sat in on a  "study session" at the Chicago Green Building Center.  that was somewhat helpful.  I'm glad I did it but wouldn't rely on it.

a lot of these posts point back to the usgbc website.

i'm wondering if someone could be a little more specific about which sections of the website were particularly helpful when they took the exam.

thank you for your help.

another question i have is about design versus construction submittals, has anyone been able to determine a rule of thumb that works for all (or even most) of the credits to figure out if they would be part of the design submittal, or part of the construction submittal.

Hey sprout -

I'm just beginning to study for this, so I don't know if this is specific enough for you, but I flagged a post by prospero (http://www.areforum.org/forums/forum12/29826.html)

that said:

These are probably the best pages to study on the USGBC website:

Test Specifications & Sample Questions:
https://www.usgbc.org/ShowFile.aspx?DocumentID=3178

CIR Guidelines:

http://www.usgbc.org/DisplayPage.aspx?CMSPageID=1497

Certification Process specific to LEED-NC:
http://www.usgbc.org/ShowFile.aspx?DocumentID=1108

Registration Process:

good luck!
