Yes and for the winner we have a little ARE 4.0 if you don't get herrr done before the switch.

26 years old... I did most of my studying at night.

I did however try a very unconventional study method to make up for the lack of time that I have with work, family and personal activities. I read and recorded the entire Reference Guide into mp3s that I added to my ipod. Took me 14 hours to record the entire CI book. I listened to my audio files whenever i could; during my lunch hour, while driving to work/home, while watching sports events, while at the golf range, while at work, etc. This was very helpful and i helped me pass with a 181 score. I used this study method for one month, though it took me two weeks to make it through the entire book.

To all the "young" college folk who are passing and insinuating that "older" folk may have "old dog, new trick" syndrome or lack of time for LEED.  First I applaud your enthusiasm and desire for a sustainable world.  Many of us do.  But remember that with age often comes 1.  more experience, 2.  more drive to succeed, 3.  more conciousness and action in beliefs.  As has been stated here previously "Sustainable design" is nothing new.  The concepts have been around for a long time.  Remember the "greenest" building is the one that is not built, or the one that is existing that recieves energy efficient upgrades.  (Not the one that is demolished so a new "green" building can be built.)

Furthermore, don't write off the "older" folk who may not be LEED certified but have hand over fist more experience in sustainable design and PRACTICAL applications of them than a younger generation.  After all, you might need an employer for a job after college and you will definitely need some practical experience.

I was 33, married with first infant child and determined to pass.  Passed first time thanks to the practical understanding and use of sustainable design I have accrued through the years.

 31. Passed LEED last year with 197. Have a toddler, extremely busy work life, social life and family. Study during nights 9-11 and 1 day on the weekend. Doing ARE now and am doing pretty well but it is a struggle and the only thing getting me going is my strong drive. Aim to finish it all in 1 year

No disrespect, stephane 08, but your questions show us what your prejudices are; on the other hand, you asked for info to check them out. My question is, how have the answers you received informed your point of view?

* The exam is very academic and rely more on memory than field experience.

I don't agree with this- the exam isn't "academic," it's synthetic. Yes, you have to learn a lot of data to take the exam. But, historically, I'm not good at memorizing, and I passed.  Seeing the exam as "academic" and relying "more on memory than field experience" is a flawed analysis. I think trying to memorize your way to a pass of the LEED AP Exam is a risky and limited  learning strategy applied a very complex and judgment oriented test.

I think passing the exam requires several skills:

1.) It requires top notch learning skills (including rote memorization), and it also requires understanding the intent of each credit, and how the methods described in the reference guide fulfilll that intent.

2.) It requires sharp judgement in sorting out the intent of credits when you select your answer, or answers on the exams multiple choice questions.  Judgment is synthetic thinking.  The LEED AP exam is famously difficult because it often asks you to select the best answer (or answers), not simply the right answer.

3.) It requires great test-taking skills - careful reading to suss out the intent of the question and match it to the meaning of each one of the possible answers provided.

Passing the exam requires the baseline skills needed for integrated design.

LEED AP nearly two years ago when I was 29 and 6 months pregnant. Was an RA at 28. It's good to get the exams out of the way before the kids arrive...

I'm 49 - a marketer for an engineering firm.  My goal was to pass the LEED AP exam before my 50th birthday, and I'm happy to report I did just that last month (186).

Our firm has a real mix of ages when it comes to LEED APs, from right out of college to a little older than me, with more still coming along.

Each season of life has its advantages and disadvantages when it comes to studying for a big exam like the LEED AP.  Really, anyone can do it with enough interest, focus, attention, and intelligence.  You work around your challenges.

30...I treated LEED AP like ARE test #10 and wrapped up the entire sequence in less than a year with lots of understanding from my wife and two kids (both under 2yrs).

Owner of my own firm for 15 years- 52 yrs old

I studied hard for 6 weeks or so with the ref guide and flash cards-
and thought I knew the material pretty well and failed by 4 points
yesterday. Major bummer-

It was the time, not the material..... 90 seconds per question leaves no time to think twice-
I'll go back in a month or so-
If any one has a study guide/
sample prep exam, I would lover to have a copy-

thanks

Yes. According to USGBC I'm the youngest recorded one. I took the exam with my mother who is a licensed architect and her friend who recently graduated from architecture school. I was interested in it so I thought it would be a good idea, and now I'm studying mechanical engineering.

wow.

28 yrs old here.

All I can say is it is a huge benefit IMO to be LEED AP prior to sitting for the ARE.  I have felt both MC divisions so far have had at least a few questions I knew thanks to LEED.
