|
Just want to know by curiosity the average age of the people taking the LEED AP exam.
I suspect most LEED AP to be relatively young, because:
* The exam is very academic and rely more on memory than field experience
* Older professionals with management responsibilities may not have the time to study for the exam
* Older professionals may not have the same interest for sustainable design than younger ones
Well, I may be wrong. Ok, starting with me: I am 29.

31-years old, newly married, having trouble focusing to study.
i am a structural engineer and most of the stuff is new to me. i find the extreme memorization hard as engineers like to study from books and look things up...

27...in architecture...i needed a break from the ARE tests, so i thought this would be a nice vacation...?
and my boss took (and passed) LEED last summer...he's 47...i think...

I am 47.5 years old.
Honestly I am happy to hear that a younger group is joining the ranks.
Since, 1999 I have only worked with one LEED AP who was younger than me.

I am going to be a youngish 48 this year and am in the midst of studying.
Most everyone with me in my group is over 50 however, so I am the junior partner in my work group who is persuing this accrediation...
I don't really think it is tied specifically to age. Although you could say that we granola bar, yoga stretching, baby boomers, (dare I say it? flower children of the 60's) are probably focused equally as much on these issues as any other social group.

I second that last post! I am 59 yrs old grampa, a Senior Project Manager/Estimator and I passed LEED-NC this last monday with a 185. Experience doesn't do much towards passing the test, although some familarity with GCP and landscaping concepts is useful. It is mostly memorization, applied from the LEED viewpoint.
I believe my LEED certification will help bring value to my customers. I plan on working at my estimating consulting business until old age and memory deficiencies might invalidate me.
Some old farts still have a lot of gas, you know.

38 now..but passed when I was 37.
My firm has about 35 people...8 are LEED AP and only one is younger than me.
My experience has been just about the opposite from the OP's. I find that younger people (students, interns, etc...) place little importance on sustaimability...and I was no different when I was younger. I just wanted to design 'cool sh*t' and I gave little thought to the environmental impact of my solutions.
I wasn't until I was much older...probably in my early 30's...that the importance of sustainable design began to seep into my brain. Every day noe it becomes more and more second nature.

I am 21 and studying for the exam.
I would agree that the majority of the LEED AP's will most likely be younger than 35 but not for the reasons stephane08 has listed.
LEED is just recently being added into college ciriculums and therefore being advocated early in the CM and Arch courses. This is only going to increase as time passes and LEED becomes more popular in the constuction community.
Older professionals do have less time to study for the exam because of families but I know of older pros who have time to go back to school at night but still find the time to study.
But most certianly Im see that the older dogs dont want to learn the new tricks. I know several PMs in my own company that balked at the idea off the bat simply because of the added responsibilty and paperwork, but this too will change when the advantages of LEED become more commonly known and accepted as a fact instead of a hinderance.
I would imagine 3-5 years and a few more versions of LEED a majority of the major construction industries in the US will have at least 1 LEED AP on board.

29. getting married in a few weeks and decided to take the test as a away to distract me from all the tedious wedding details that i didn't want to get involved in. i scored a 190. i studied pretty regularly for 2 months. about 1 to 2 hours a day.

| I was 53, or so, when I passed the exam. I totally reject your theorum that the exam is biased towards recent college grads and has less reliance on "real life experience. As far as "green" classwork, I took Environmental Studies in 1972 at UCD, and pretty much just took care of the rest of my sustainablility training on a bit by bit basis as I ran across interesting things. LEED is more based on good concepts which should be a core training element of a good education, but sadly seldom are. For LEED, I studied for about 4 weeks with a lunch study group, and attended a "What is LEED seminar" which was an intro to LEED, not a exam training seminar. The seminar lasted 1.5 hrs. I passed without very much effort, the exam is not really hard if you have the basic concepts. Afgter that it is pretty much training in how to help your consultants fill out the forms. I was asked in an interview Tuesday to provide some LEED information, and couldn't repeat the elements in the point grid. The answers I kept running through my head were things like BP, BT, GS, LF, CD, MM, PD, and similar two letter acronyms. Can you geuss where my thoughts are this week?
