Hi LEEDers,

So...call me crazy...but... I PASSED!
  • Studied 2 hours after the MM exam on Tuesday
  • Studied (crazy cramming) 14 hours yesterday, Wednesday
  • Studied 2 hours this morning, Thursday
  • Built on knowledge already gained from MM exam (we had to study general LEED info for that exam) - had put probably 4 hours into LEED study for that, last weekend
  • Total of about 22 hours of study, on a solid base of green design experience
  • In midstream of ARE testing, so very focused on streamlined studying and targeted speed reading
It is possible!

Maia :D

Hey mgilman!

Congrats! I have to admit, I was a little concerned that you might not pull it off, but hey, you did it.  Welcome to the 20 hr LEED cram club.  Now if we could only do that for the ARE.... ;)

Wow !!

Impressive, what was your score? Did you only study the Reference guide? any other material?

It was close - I got a 174 out of 200. I studied the main LEED-NC book, and used 3 or 4 charts from http://www.intheleed.com as a way of focusing/streamlining. Nothing extra. I found the ftp info confused my own approach - I needed to digest the info for myself, from the primary source, and make my own cheat sheet, mnemonics, etc. Doing the practice exam on the gbci website http://www.gbci.org/ShowFile.aspx?DocumentID=3559 part way through studying really helped focus my attention on the type of info/relationships between info I needed to absorb.

mgilman, I am in total drop jaw awe....that is great!!!  I saw that you have green working experience, I have been out of practice for some time and do not have green experience, would you recommend taking it still after MM?

I'd take a look at the material first, see how it fits with your current knowledge level, and then make a decision. The ftp site in the MM folder has a mini version of the book (80 pages) but the full manual is about 400 pages. You'll need the full manual to pass (in my opinion); taking a look at the mini version will give you only a starting point.

Do you find out your score immediately or must you wait as in the ARE?

For someone with no green experience, do you think that the Reference Guide and flashcards are enough info to pass?

I think for me the green design experience was essential, otherwise I'd have needed a lot more study time and more variety in study materials. I'd also have done more on the practice exam front.

I don't want people to get the idea they can skimp on studying and automatically pass - it's a tough exam, and I was willing to risk losing the fee to give it a try. I'm glad I passed, but my method is not for everyone!

I had studied the book for a few weeks before going into the exam, and got the flashcards (the Saeger Design cards) literally the day before the exam and studied that whole evening with them. They were worth their weight in gold, in my opinion. It really made the technical information stick- and I passed on the first try!

Saeger Design Cards? I'm not familiar with them. Do you have a link to where I could purchase them?

http://leedsource.com/

It looks like they recently re did their website, so you might have to email them to obtain the cards. They get sent to you as a pdf, and you print them double sided. I actually printed them single sided (I know, I'm a paper waster) and then glued them all together- I think it made me stare at the cards longer byt doing all that cutting and pasting...

as for experience, I had taken a grad level Interior Design course that focused on green materials, but nothing more than that. A little more on the cosmetic green side, but it let me get familiar with the LEED Checklist, basic terminology,  etc.
