I just took the test yesterday and passed with a 179. Not exactly flying colors, but it works.
I was definitely helped in both knowing what to study and self confidence by reading this forum and how others' did/prepared, so I thought I'd offer my ow experience.
I began studying a long time ago in a study group that met for an hour once-a-week. That did nothing for me. I later took a sustainable design class in school that discussed LEED in little detail, so coming into studying I felt like I had an idea of what was needed. I didn't.
I began studying about 2 weeks before the test. My preparation was to read the reference guide thoroughly, which I did over about a week and a half. For each credit, I not only paid attention to each word and forced myself not to skim over anything, but I visualized what it would be like to actually go through the motions of completing the requirement, which really helped me to understand why a certain team member would be responsible and what synergies would simply make sense to work. This was invaulable, since it wasn't a matter of memorization, but of common sense. "Of course a green roof would effect both of these credits," that type of thing, rather then memorizing green roofs affect this, this, and this credit, which I found to be far more difficult to do.
In the last 2 days I studied like crazy, and the day before, when I was stressing out, I bought the greenexamprep.com LEED tests. I am usually not one to purchase study guides or study aids-- never did Kaplan prep for the GRE or SAT or anything, since I felt like I could just as easily study on my own-- but these tests really, really helped. For anyone who doubts them, I for one was skeptical, but bit the bullet, and was glad I did. I'm not sure I would've passed without them, since they really highlight how difficult the test is, how nitpicky, and they have an option for the tests that allows you to answer a question and immediately afterwards it will tell you if you got in worng, and will tell you why it was wrong, etc. Very, very helpful. Basically points out holes in your knowledge and fills them on the spot.
I would not suggest only studying for two weeks before. It was stressful and I basically studied from 10am until modnight the day before and woke up really early to study more in the morning. This is not optimal for preparation, for getting proper sleep, or for long term memory. But, for those who are in a similar predicament, I am proof that there is hope, and that even if you haven't studied for 6 months, you can still pass it.
Good luck to everyone out there.
