does anyone know if using this as a substitute for the $150 Reference guide is advisable...or rather, what is the difference?

digging deeper into my own question; the link above is from this web site:

http://www.cce.ufl.edu/LEED/precourse.asp

...they call that document the "short" version of the Ref Guide for NC v2.2

however, on the USGBC website

 http://www.usgbc.org/DisplayPage.aspx?CMSPageID=220

-that same document is found using the link for:

"Version 2.2 rating system"

....what's the difference btw the "rating system" and the ref. guide?...again, can they be used interchangeably for the purpose of studying for the test?

>>am i just getting overwhelmed w/the amount of INFO for studying, or is this just really damned confusing??

anyone?

I would recommend using the complete Reference Guide as your primary study reference, and using the Rating System ("short version") as a supplemental tool.

There is a lot of information in the Reference Guide that you will not find in the Rating System that you will definitely need to know in order to pass the exam.

Unfortunately there really isn't a shortcut to studying for the exam; you just need to read and understand the big Reference Guide as best you can.

thanks for reply - i'll assume you're correct regarding using the REF GUIDE as main source of info...however, the overlap of info is still confusing, and frankly the "rating guide" seems extremely comprehensive in itself. Am i alone in feeling the approach to studying for LEED is vague?

....let the memorization commence...

The way I see it, the Ref Guide IS the Rating System plus lots of supplemental info on each prerequisite and credit. From my understanding, the exam covers info from the rating system, but only a small percentage. The supplemental info is heavily tested as well as information from the USGBC website.

Like others, my advice would be to get a complete comprehension of the large 400+ pg reference guide and as a result you will know the rating system cold.

I work with an individual who didn't get the large reference guide right away.  She memorized the short version - an interesting approach.  By doing that, she was able to study the 402 page reference guide later, with a good basic understanding of the relationship between credits.

There is no way you could pass the test without studing the larger version.  No way.

Good luck.

again - thanks for replies...much appreciated.

>>i guess i was looking for a short cut (no pun intended)...

>>however, i have another question re: the REF GUIDE - given the test is supposedly changing in 2009, will the REF GUIDE v2.2 still be relevant? It would be sad to dump $150, only to have an outdated source 2 months later...i couldn't find anything saying one way or the other on USGBC site.

I could be wrong and someone who knows for sure can correct me but I don't believe the current reference guide will be completely useless when the new version is published. I think the majority of the information will still apply with some minor changes here, maybe major changes there. However I think these changes will be captured by an errata published in conjunction with the new version. LEED 2009 would then be comprised of the older reference guide plus the new errata sheets, and I believe they are free.

The major changes to come with LEED 2009 from what I've read is the difficulty of the test will increase (passing rate, etc).

Again, this is only my thoughts; I haven't gotten this directly from USGBC or anything so I could be wrong.

If you want to be a LEED AP, you have to read the reference guide. Plain and simple. Anyone can take the exam, but you do have to put in some work.

I don't know. We do have 3-4 copies of LEED NC and LEED EB 2.2 in the office. I downloaded what is available for free from USGBC and it looked similar.

One study reference that I highly recommend is: USGBC (CO) *** Chapter - Leed Professional Accreditation Study Guide and Practice Exam. Well worth the money.

While I have known people to pass the exam without purchasing the Reference Guide, it is rare, and in those cases it was because they'd either taken a class or bought a bunch of other study materials which usually end up costing more anyway.

At the end of the day, 80-90% of the material on the exam is derived from the Reference Guide.  If you are trying to save money by not purchasing the book, I suggest you just buy a used one.  The 2nd edition will be sufficient to pass the test if that helps in your search - just make sure to update it with the appropriate errata sheet from the USGBC website.
