i'm preparing for september, and am wondering if anyone has any advice on the level of detail we should be prepared for when it comes to the aia docs.

is it necessary to memorize all the documents by number? or just the big ones? i was planning to memorize the numbers for the big ones and just to have a general idea about the lesser ones and what they offer, but not necessarily memorize the numbers of each.  does this sound reasonable?

my list of big ones includes:
A101 - owner-contractor
A201 - general conditions
A701 - instructions to bidders
B141 - owner-architect
C141 - architect-consultant
G701 - change order
G702/703 - application for certificate of payment and continuation sheet
G704 - certificate of substantial completion
G706 - contractor's affidavit of payment of debts and claims
G706A - contractor's affidavit of release of liens
G707 - consent of surety to final payment
G707A - consent of surety to reduction/partial release of retainage
G710 - architect's supplemental instructions
G712 - shop drawing and sample record
G714 - construction change directive

does anyone think there are others that should be on this list?  if i have a good grasp of these am i safe for the test?  do they want to know that you know the numbers of them as well as their content?

thanks

Looks like overkill.

From CAB's site:

"Candidates should review and be familiar with B141, B163, and A201 of the 1997 American Institute of Architects (AIA) Documents."

Hi,

my point of view- no promisses, supported by first hand impression during my first trial in march and some similar questions I had found on this forum earlier this year:

-forget about the numbers- some of them have been recently changed by the way. No direct questions will be asked regarding certain documents and their content. The AIA Doc's are not mandatory to use anyhow. The Architects Practice  Act  (Californa Law) requires you to have a written contract (with some exceptions), but this has nothing to do with the AIA contracts. AIA is a private Club.

But: if you don't have a lot of experiences of how larger projects work, the AIA Documents will give you a very good idea what the risks and pitfalls and pleasures (like beeing payed) of our trade are in dealing with Owners, Contractors etc. It's full of lingo that came a long way and should be part of our vocabulary if we like it or not.

So, get a good idea what is in the A201, B141, B163, check, what has recently changed in the 2007 edition. If you have time left, skim through the other titles, to
see what is offered-  it will be worthwhile.

Again, no " tell us what AIA Document Axxx contains..." will be asked- I am pretty sure about that.

it would be good to read other opinions.

you should know what most of those mean, what the responsibilities are for each party per document, but knowing the exact numbers and other minute details (dates, etc.) are probably unnecessary.
