Hi,

I live in NJ , and I heared that  the state of NY borad of architects agrreed that starting OCT. 2008 anyone who is enrolled in IDP can sit for the ARE exam before completeting the IDP requirements. my question is .....

I finished about 20 month of training units ,  can I start taking the ARE exam via NY and get licensed in NY then I transefer my license to NJ , if so , do I have to be a NY resident to do this?

Hi there,
  • last time I checked there was no residency requirement for NY - check online to be sure
  • you can apply for a reciprocal license in NJ, rather than a transfer of license
  • have not heard about being able to start exams before IDP completion - verify on the NCARB website or with a phone call!
Good luck!

I believe that NY has recently changed the rules to allow testing to begin before completion of IDP.
Somebody else recently posted a link to that announcement recently.
No, you don't have to be a NY resident to test through NY.

If you decide to test through NY you may want to transfer your record back to NJ before seeking an initial license, rather than getting licensed in NY and then seeking reciprocity. It's generally more expensive and time consuming to go through the reciprocity process - it involves paying application fees and dues to two states, and in some states applying for reciprocity requires NCARB certification, which often takes 4-7 months after obtaining a first license.

NY has relatively high fees/dues. There are at least 8 other states that allow testing before completion of IDP (you don't have to live in them or even take the tests in them to test "through" them) - so you may want to consider other options (Texas, Wisconsin, Florida, Vermont...)

this from the NYS Office of Professions website:

"IDP/ARE Concurrency Permitted in NYS

The New York State Board of Regents approved regulatory changes permitting architectural interns to take the Architect Registration Examination (ARE) concurrent with the Intern Development Program (IDP) beginning on October 9, 2008. This opportunity is available if an architectural intern has a degree (Bachelor of Architecture or higher) from a National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) accredited program, or a combination of education and experience equaling a NAAB accredited degree.

Along with a NAAB accredited degree or its equivalent in education and experience, interns must submit a New York State Application and fee to the New York State Education Department, and must be enrolled in the IDP with the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB).

As we finalize the process for the taking of the ARE concurrent with IDP, we will post the information to the OP website."

woohoo....finally NYS is allowing people to sit for the ARE faster than before-i wonder why? I wish they had come up with this a few yrs ago...
