I am trying to site for the ARE in my home state. The requirements are such that one needs to have a degree from an accredited architectural school and IDP verification of work experience.

I was a self employed professional engineer who owned an A/E firm for 20 years who employed 2 architects and 18 engineers and support personnel. I had sold the business awhile ago and have a need to be licensed as an architect. In my firm, we provided Architectural, Structural, Mechanical, electrical, Site, Civil, Water and Wastewater engineering services for a variety of projects. We also did consulting for municipalities reviewing planning and zoning board applications and major infrastructure projects. I also did not come from an accredited architecture school, but I did over see the work for two licensed architects one of whom was registered with NCARB.

I gained a tremendous amount of valued experience in that time. I would like to sit and take the ARE to be licensed as an architect. My question is how can I translate my diverse experience into an IDP or convince the state board that the experience is valid?

First I would suggest you check out the NCARB website at http://www.ncarb.org for a starting reference point.  You should probably call NCARB to see what they would recommend.  You should probably also talk to your state's ARB to see how you should proceed.  People on this forum will give you great advice but if we're wrong, you suffer.  Talk to NCARB and your state ARB, that way you can be sure to get the most correct information.

It would be very interesting to know what they tell you. The movement of the regulations has been away from accommodating people in your situation. I hope you'll post a follow-up.
