hi,
i'm curious to hear from others in the building industry. please share with us your type of work, approximate location ( the state if you want ), if you're busy, and what you may see for future workload.
i'm in ct. and do mostly residential with some commercial, religious. residential has slowed down quite a bit in the last year while commercial is still busy.
you ?

i'm in the dfw metroplex, but we do work accross the country. we only do country clubs (clubhouses) and city clubs (not dance clubs, but dining clubs).
right now we have a lot of work. my boss has been doing this kind of work for over 3 decades and has always said he does his most work when the economy is down like it is. clubs can get great loans and contractors are hungry for work.

Central California -- Busy. Backlog through 2009.
Schools & district facilities; Municipal faclilities; Mixed use; and, unbelievably, still some spec residential.

Lewisburg, West "by God" Virginia!
Type of work? Multi-family apartments and commerical of almost every friggin' type. I've got 3 hotels going right now, a 50,000 sq. ft. shopping center, doctor's offices, etc., etc. We do work in 12 states--we being "me" doing most the work. We also do a LOT of historic preservation, but I don't have to mess with that.
I loathe residential work and will only do it under exceptional circumstances (e.g: boatloads of money)
Am I busy? *eye twitches, cackles madly* Can you say, "heart attack?" Can you say, "high blood pressure?"
But why am I not a millionaire yet? The Jew got "jewed" somehow!
Hey, someone was telling me about this weird thing called a "vacation." I'm skeptical.

Do you really need to perpetuate stereotypes on an ARE forum? If you are Jewish, the comment is even worse. Have some pride and respect for your culture. Comments like the one you wrote propagate anti-semitism. I hope you think about who's reading this blog before you make ridiculous and hurtful statements.

Oh, man...pullleeasee! You DO NOT want to start verbal war with me--I send self-righteous, politically correct people to the deepest pits of Gehenna.
In case you're itchin' for a cyber-scorch, some comments:
1) Look up "sarcastic, sardonic, and satire"
2) Look up "hyperbole"
3) 30-years of genealogical research = my Jew family documented to 768AD (hmm, I guess I'm only "vaguely" aware of my culture...wait, I thought Judaism was a religion?)
4) Wife is a Muslim (who is more African than most African-Americans in case you try that cliched route)
5) Do you have a clue what "Semitic" means?
To accuse me of or say I would cause "anti-Semitism" to be inferred, would be like a cat saying it was a dog and yelling "down with all cats!"
Honestly, ALL races, creeds, sexes, sexual orientation, ethnicity, country of origin, etc., etc. are open to "sarcastic, sardonic, and satirical" comment since there are a plethora of Darwin Award Candidates everywhere (I include myself--otherwise I wouldn't be in architecture!--ha-ha!)
Why not just answer artichoke's question and leave the offensive to people who are masters at offending everyone (everyone is "equal" after all, right?).

I cancelled a vaction once to meet a deadline.
Two months later, the project was redesigned.
Lesson learned, I'm not indespensible and the sky isn't really falling, and there's no point in acting like either is the case.

Brudgers-you're my hero ;-)
It took me years to reach the same conclusion............
I've re-shuffeled my priorities and my family is now number 1 on the list.
I've come to that conclusion when my boss and "2nd in command" took time off while their project was near completion and I was stuck with it. The day they left a controversial change order for extra $300K appeared on my desk..........
Cheers.

Yes
and to OP, yes, my company is busy, all commercial (public, private, etc), zero residential in the NW. I am keeping my hours in the low 40's because I am studying and focused on other stuff, but if I wanted to work more and take on additional projects I could.

Thanks Calatrava88. You're right to make that point---perpetuating ethnic stereotypes hurts everyone. But, IronWarrior is a good guy, and likely intended his comment in a humourous vein, a la Mel Brooks or George Carlin.
To answer the post, healthcare architecture is stable for time being in the southeast.

Oy Vey!
Calatrava88 and jmcarr are impotent wimps who never were properly bullied in elementary school. If you had been properly bullied like I was you would have figured out and memorized the saying "sticks and stones will hurt my bones but words can never hurt me." Repeat it a few times maybe your balls will drop.
So, jmcarr, when did you get the title of spokesperson for "everyone" anyways? Oh wait...*ouch* I guess I'm hurt too because you said that "stereotypes hurt everyone". Iron Warrior's comments can only be "ridiculous and hurtful" if your bigoted, stereotyping mind assumes as much. If you were hurt or offended you chose to respond that way; I think its reasonable to assume that iron warrior wasn't physically threatening you when you both read the words in his post. Whatever happened to the notion of freedom of thought and expression anyways? Both of your replies are remarkably intolerant considering your lavish, pretentious, shallow display of tolerance.
What a couple of oversensitive, whining, shrill panty waists. What kind of a world would this be if folks like you two were completely in charge? It would quickly get to the point where not a single human being would communicate with any other out of fear of "hurting everybody" and bringing on the incessant persecution of the thought police. Oh wait...it already is to a large degree like that now in 2008. Thanks a lot p.c. police, can't wait for your ranks to continue to swell! Then surely through the magical process of diversity everyone and everything will become equal and we will all live happily ever after, each in our own state-issued private cocoon of silence, happily buffered from the terrible effects of all thoughts and words that *perish the thought* might offend.
Furthermore, I find it ironic that someone so willing to lecture others about anti-semitism would choose the number 88 to be part of their name [only 1 post? c'mon you coward don't hide]. You gotta just love it when the ignoramus' of the world are so quick to lecture everyone else concerning their wisdom. All it takes for me to start to think that the movie Idiocracy is actually a contemporary reality show is to listen to the blather of a couple of parrot heads like these two. Idiocracy II coming soon to a society near you...live and in 3D!

We're plugging along, but things seem to be a little unsteady at the moment. We are in San Diego, or as I and countless others love to call it, DAGO. A quick comment on IW's humor and the ensuing bantering back and forth. While it's obvious no harm was meant by the steotypical comment made what I've seen happen with ethnic "humor" is that it tends to open up the door towards more and more viscious comments being slung around. It's kind of like seeing a pack of dogs playing and seeing the play suddenly turn into a pack ripping into one of the more vulnerable members. I've seen this happen several times and thats why for me I prefer not to contribute to that type of humor (of course, most humor has at the root of it someone getting the nasty end of the stick). A final observation. There is no more untrue adage than the hackneyed phrase" Sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me".

I agree. Honestly, I debated whether or not to publicly respond. The deciding factor was my fear that One Fella's comment could be interpreted as an opening on this Forum to encouraging ethnic slander, stereotypes, and prejudice, be the comments against Jews, African Americans, Catholics, whomever.
Sometimes the best method to containing prejudicial remarks is to simply ignore them.
P.S. Healthcare sector is still strong in Southeast!

I can't say that I've read anything more ironic in a forum before. This is movie material. What I can't figure out is if I'm looking at oblivious, stupid, ignorant or nasty.

here in NE (and i would guess the midwest in general) we seem to be a little bit slower than last year at this time, but not wildly so. we do quite a bit of work regionally, and it everything seems to be on pretty even footing.
mostly commercial work with occasional high end res...

Dago is just short for Diego, and is not any type of slur that I'm aware of. I stand by all of my comments.

I just looked up Dago in Wikipedia and apparently it has been used as an ethnic slur against Italians, as well as slang for my home town of San Diego used mainly by Marines. If I insulted anybody with the use of this nickname I apologize and I'll leave it there.

| Central Jersey, I am very busy with freelance and the office has slowed just a slight click but I attribute this to my boss taking it easy. Actually, it appears several waterfront homes may all start up very soon, and all at once. We do mainly custom residential. We are busy because we deliver a good product and with just 2 guys in the office, its not that hard to keep busy. Overall though, contractors around here are feeling the squeeze. Some materials are up and some are down, I guess cause of the slowdown (gyp board for example)
