Imac,
Here are a few books:

The Age of Barns by Eric Sloane. It is out of print but you might be able to get it in a library. It has some very nice barn details, including a few highlighting (fairly rustic) stair construction.

This one is a stairbuilding classic:
A Treatise on Stairbuilding and Handrailing by W & A Mowat. This is THE classic text on how to do it right. The details might be a bit formal for a barn but the principles still apply.

Most barns were/are very regional and one style does not necessarily work across the board. Are you converting a barn into a residence. If so, then any stairway you build will have to meet applicable codes.

Find a good carpenter/stairbuilder in your area that understands classical architecture and also timber framing and ask him/her for a consultation, especially if you are trying to match existing patterns and materials.
