Hi
I was looking over on the web site it several days ago. I have not seen the full published report yet.
The smaller firm which I have been working for, which is located in Seattle, is paying under the the 2002 level for my position.
I have 7 years of office experience and a Masters.
I worked right out of school for an A&E firm, doing the same thing and I was making over 50,000 in 2002 thru 2005 which is right on target. Engineers do get paid more, and architects in engineering firms get paid more also it seems.
The full, 152-page report is available for $195 for AIA members and $249 for nonmembers. there are Nine regional reports are available for $75 each for AIA members, $125 for nonmembers.
It would be interesting to see the regional reports. My son who works at a mid size architectural firm, lives just north of LA makes 15K more than I do and he has no degree.

My firm actually had a full copy of the compensation report on the "new" shelf in our library - I couldn't resist checking it out and browsed through it on Friday after work. Let me preface my statement with the fact that I work in a large firm and I work in healthcare which has been one of the areas that hasn't been as hard hit as other residential, etc (and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it stays this way
Categorized as a Design Staff 1, I am in or very near the upper quartile for my State/City/Metro Area and Region. I am above median under all firms & the 250+ employees cateogries.
My one caveat is that I do not expect to get nearly the salary bump that they show, in all the categories, once I am licensed. Actually, I think I may "lose" money because my firm wants you to switch to salary once you're thusly qualified...I'm still trying to wrap my head around this and the loss of the sizable amount of overtime I sometimes end up with.

All the organizations I have membership to seem to make additional money from publications such as this. This publication might be useful to some architectural HR departments but probably a waste of money for most others, AIA member or not.
I don't see what difference it makes.
You take a job, hopefully you do well and you are compensated. If not move on.
I have never found it important to compare myself to another employee. There is no point in this.
That is done by management. If the employee is deemed by management to be worthy of advancement, it usually happens and usually with compensation.

i would agree with that, but i know some people work in smaller firms and sometimes the boss is a little out of touch on compensation for the people lower on the totem poll. i've had to ask for most of pay raises and have always got the pay raise, but i also always go in showing what the range is in the area, reminding him of what he has me doing, and remind him of the lack of change orders (because of issues in the drawings) and rfi's for my projects.

I wish they would publish a 'free' abridged version- i really don't want the "innies" and the "outies" of the compensation...just the basics...

I actually wasn't trying to compare myself to others with my previous post - I'm more than happy with my position, my responsibility level and my compensation, especially in this particular economic climate. To me, these surveys just back up so that you can be more sure of "what you're worth". Sometimes it is easy for those higher ups to lose track with what is entry level pay and by extension all other positions.
I just hate that this type of information is so closely controlled by the AIA, when other career tracks salaries are easily googled - since I'd just read the survey, I thought I'd help out a fellow forum poster.

call your local AIA office. I know the BSA in Boston will fax you the few pages over if you call and request it from them.
I came into this firm and did not get a raise, so the survey helps to show that I am underpaid for my experience and position. Plus, my PM loves to see all the numbers and how I justify what I am asking for. All they can say is no, right?

will the BSA actually fax the pages with salary comparison or will they give you the free preview? it's nice to know how much you should be making, but $75 is just too much for younger professionals.
thanks

You can get the free 4 page preview from the AIA. I got one in an email from them, and I am posting it below.
Last year, the BSA offered to fax me to pages for Boston and Cambridge, but I found a full copy of the report someone had posted online, I think it was atually a school or AIA chapter.

you have to purchase it, therefore there would be a copyright issue to upload it. A big no-no here and in the real world.
