This "good news" only applies to those taking the ARE 4.0, but I took Structural Systems today and I just wanted to let everyone know that there were no "fill-in-the-blank" or "check all that apply" questions on my test. I was quite scared of those types of questions going into the exam (because of the NCARB practice tests and other published materials that indicated that those questions were part of the new format). I kept waiting to get one, and it never came. Every question (besides the structural vignette obviously) was a multiple-choice, A-B-C-D answer. I don't know if my case is unique but I would have to doubt that.
It was probably about half "general structures" and half "lateral forces"... although many questions would be hard to categorize.

Kelly,
thanks for the report. How do you feel you did on the test? What study guides did you use (4.0 or older)?
I was wondering who would be the first to report on the 4.0 exams

I don't know exactly how I feel about the test... right afterwards I felt ok, but now that I've had a little time to think about potential mistakes, I am convinced that I failed. So it could go either way.
I think the hardest thing about this test is that there is so much information to cover. It is so much to have a clear understanding of, and the test itself is long... I hit a wall after about 100 questions, but (obviously) kept going and had about 30 minutes to spare to go over the questions I had "flagged." I don't know if that's good or bad... I had enough time to catch some mistakes, but I also feel like I might have rushed through or given up and "guessed" on some problems that I should have spent more time on. There were some random code questions that I didn't know the answer to, and some other obscure things that I feel like I should not have to memorize... but at this point I can't remember specifics.
One IRRITATING thing about the newfangled computer calculator that you have to use is that there is no square root function! Unless I am an idiot and couldn't see it, or it's tricky and doesn't look like a square root symbol. And you have to hit an extra button to get to the "scientific" calculator screen every time you pop the calculator up on the screen. That stuff was just an annoyance I guess, but I'd rather use my own calculator.
The structural vignette was unbelievably simple, which was a relief after having sat in that room for hours at that point. It looked like most of the practice ones I've seen, basically. All I did to review the vignette was read the Dorf Solutions book and review some other peoples' practice solutions that they posted on this forum. I never did one myself (I did review the software) and it took me less than 15 minutes. I had 45 minutes to kill and I was nervous that I had made a stupid mistake, so I drew an axonometric drawing of my solution on my scratch paper, to make sure it would work. That part, which was the very end of the exam, was actually fun! A good way to end it.
As far as study materials go, I used the new 4.0 Ballast book, which is pretty much the same thing as the old books (I have old versions too). However I skipped over most of the complicated problems, which I intended to go back and figure out, but I never did... I don't think that hurt me that much. I used both the 3.1 and 4.0 NCARB practice tests that you can download. I attended David Thaddeus's structures/lateral forces seminar a couple months ago and he gave us a ton of materials -- his own stuff as well as material he's collected from different sources. His structural guide that is posted on this forum is great. It was recommended on this forum (and by David Thaddeus) that we read those FEMA documents (I read chapters 4, 5, 8 & 9) as well as that ATC/SEAOC "Built to Resist Earthquakes) thing. That stuff got a little redundant, but it was very useful for just hammering lateral forces concepts into my head. I read a few sections of the IBC, which was fun. I had a few Ching books that I used as references for general concepts. And lastly, yesterday I brought out my Archiflash cards, and surprisingly enough, I reviewed some things that showed up on the exam which I felt like I hadn't seen before.
Anyway... I could have studied more, I could have studied less.
Hope this helps...

You get 3 1/2 hours for the multiple choice part (125 questions). There is a 15 minute break, and then you have one hour for the structural vignette.

kelleyh,
On the calculator note, is it the same as in the NCARB practice program?

I'm a transition candidate and need to take GS and LF. I'm just curious - should I try to take them now, i.e. cram them in before 12/30/08 so I can fail once before the June 30 deadline, or just take the 4.0 exam? I have all the books for the old one and took the Thaddeus workshop over a year ago. Which test is easier? Many thanks for any advice.

juin,
You've got to get BT out of the way, if you haven't already. I'd probably do SP after that, and then focus on GS and LF if you have time before 4.0.

Yes I am doing just that - BT (will take next week), then SP before 12/30, then leed before it switches to 2009 (maybe early 2009), and GS/LF on 3.1 or perhaps I should just wait for 4.0. I'm just wondering which of the two... 3.1 or 4.0 structures, is easier. I don't mind retaking the struc. vignette. Thanks.

Don't worry about LEED, very unimportant compared to the ARE. I would focus on getting 3.1 done. You have I think unitil late June to complete it.
