I just got my FAIL letter for General Stuctures - gosh darnit. I hate how the letter says FAIL really big at the top, like you are a big loser....I swear, the profession of architecture sure can knock you on your butt from time to time......
In hindsight, I should have practiced the calculations more, so that they were second hand. My strategy was to get some, but not all of the calcs correct, but this depended on getting almost all of the conceptual word problems correct--- and there were a lot of heinous and trick questions and things I didn't know, and don't want to know.......also, I'll bet I got 20 calc questions, and I sucked wind on all of them.
Ugghh..........this whole experience reminds me of my college days, where at my university the architecture students were thought of as artsy and the engineering professors tried to punish us with impossible structures classes............
So I get to retake this right at Christmas --- Merry Christmas, huh?
Oh well, now I am moving on to the 3 graphic sections.......see you back here in 6 months!

i tested this morning and uggg is right. i had 13 calcs, and i was not prepared for them. more specfically, they required that i re-arrange the equation to find a different variable than what i've been practicing. i'm not so good at that to begin with, and under the time crunch, forget about it. i did as suggested on this forum and marked all the calcs for the end> i had exactly 1 hour left for the 13 calcs. i stone cold guessed on about half of them. i had a couple truss related questions; another topic i was so intimidated by during studying that i didn't do enough prep. i took mark mitalski's online GS course and that helped me tremendously on the conceptual / theory. not so much on the math.
do yourself a favor and really know how to do those practice probs backwards and forwards. i know it's very painful but you must force yourself to do it. i looked the other way and will most likely pay the price with a re-test.

| I feel the pain. I didn't prep well enough for both GS and LF especially with the calcs. I got 2 big fat Fail letters in the mail on Friday. I'll get to do my retakes in the beginning of the new year. I've got PD next month which I'm going to make sure that I pass and then I'm going to take a month off and then prepare like crazy for the structures tests.

| I'm not too sure that I remember all that well. I tested both on July 3rd. The calc questions that I had were basic math. Nothing really fancy.

There are very few calcs on the LF exam. Especially since there isn't a reference section.
The important thing to know for LF, is that it uses seismic equations from IBC 2003 and later. Older Kaplan and Ballast study guides use the old UBC formulas. Many people get confused by this.

I thought LF was much more fair than GS......concepts really important.
As far as calculations, I remember there were several parapet questions which were similar to the Kaplan example problems. Otherwise the math was basic overturning moment stuff.
When I was studying for LF, I figured I had failed GS--make sure you really know soils and foundations for both tests.......

Got some good news.....even though I failed General Structures, I just found out I passed Lateral Forces! Alright.
I am following in the footsteps of my friend, who also failed GS but passed LF.
She said that in the end, she actually LIKED structures, so maybe it will sink in the second time around......
