Hey everyone:

First, I want to thank everyone who has posted replies to my many concerns regarding calculating reactions and moments about a point. You are truely patient people. I was so worreid about this exam yet thanks to those of you who suggested that I relax and focus on the concepts rather than the formulas, I was able to walk into the test center relatively calm.

I studied for about 8 weeks, about 4 hours per night and 18-20 hours on weekends (it's a wonder than I'm still married and the kids remember my name...other than "dad"). I assembled a 3 ring binder and sectioned it into catagories such as forces, reactions, stress and strain, beam design, steel columns, concrete framing systems, etc. Each day I would practice writing down Thaddeus's cheat sheet as well as about 50% more information that I thought I would need.  I studied like I never studied before because it has been so long since I studied structures in college. And, given that most of what I do is sent to engineering consultants, I rarely become involved in designing the structural aspects of a project. Anyway, I finished the exam just 60 minutes ago and I thought I'd share the experience while it is still fresh in my mind.

The Test:

I was so blown away in terms of how relatively simple and straight forward my exam was compared to both NCARB's sample test and Kaplan's questions and answer book. I had 9 calculations, which were very simple and did not require much work in terms of steps. I would definitely recommend working with the windows calculator as you study. After weeks of practicing with it, I didn't find the calculator all that bad. You just have to watch to make sure that what you input is showing up correctly.

I had nothing on retaining walls, history, columns, foundations. I had a fair amount on wood (ie; trusses and hardware identification), a fair amount on systems (ie: given a circumstance, what system would be appropriate, a few more code related questions than I studied for, I had one WTF question regarding the soil boring log( which I have been trying to find out what it is in my books but haven't found it yet).

I had a lot of concept questions on loading of beams. You really need to know the formulas from the standpoint of what they mean and how they work, ie: if the beam spans 20' more, how does that affect the moment of inertia, etc.

While the calculations were simple, I still guessed on 4 of the 9 because they were worded in a way that I was not used to seeing. I also took "educated" guesses on about 20 general knowledge base questions. So if I'm lucky, I passed, if not, I know the next time not to get so friggin stressed out over the exam. I actually finished the exam with about 40 minutes to spare which was great because I could take my time and really check my answers. It's really not as bad as I thought it was going to be.

Hopefully, I passed. Now it's on to lateral forces on August 16th and maybe.... just maybe, I'll be done with this all ... and reclaim my life!

Cheers everyone ...and thanks again! .....:)

btw ... no bolt questions, no handrail, no canopy ....  it really felt like a Materials and Methods exam with a couple calculations sprinkled in....go figure!

Ha! ... I think while I'm in the "study zone" and with only 2 1/2 weeks before lateral forces, I'm gonna just jump right in and get to work on lateral forces. After August 16th I'll take it easy and wait for the results.....:)

Good Luck! you're on your way, see you at the finish line, hopefully mine is in Oct. (retake of BT), got a "gutter glitch" last time and failed the all three 2nd half vignettes, asked ncarb and got a typ. "no glitch" respond, so here I am, back in the BT forum, any pointers are welcome...

I'm already checking the mail box and it's only been 10 days. I did get one result within 10 or 12 days - forget which exam - NY State tends to be pretty quick. Good thing I have LF studying to distract me! Oh, not to mention my kids and work and life and summer visitors...

Hey btb;

Unfortunately NCARB doesn't respond very well with reports of glitches and the like. I consider myself extremely lucky that I have not had any problems thus far with the exam computer at Prometrics.... (knock on wood).

The pointers that I can give is to simply practice those vignettes and upload them for comments...but you probably already know that..... :)

Good Luck in October!

Hahahahahaha .... I do the same! ..... so it's good that we have LF to study for .... but that won't checking the mailbox. Let us know when you get it!
