So, in going through deflection and max moment exercises, kaplan has presented the necessity to do seperate calcs for live vs. dead load. The building code also clearly allows for this(L/360, L/240).
Why doesn't "total load" simply govern ? Thanks for your time.

lol i don't know, sounds like a valid question. i guess you're always finding the total load, its just two factors in that process. you just have to consider both when designing a building structure and that's why they seperate the two concepts. there's the weight of the building structure itself, but hey don't forget all the people and computers and snow on top too.

Thanks...based on yours and other local response(s), I have concluded that the code allowances (and seperate calcs) for LL and DL are of a value engineering significance,... to avoid a strict total load analysis that would always require larger members, shorter spans, etc... in every circumstance.
An engineer told me, that much of the deflection factors the code builds in are for as much psychological reasons as structural. Sagging beams can calc out, they just don't look right.

yes, it reminds me of a story my professor told us. he built a house that cantilevered over a hillside. it made his wife nervous so he hung a collumn from it.
