Yes folks, I finally did it after third time, If I will start all over again I would probably
take the Mitalski or Thaddeus seminar. Again I would like to thank everyone on this
site.
This is what I studied and reference material:
Kaplan Study Guide 2006
Kaplan Flashcard
Kaplan 2007 Test Bank
Kaplan Question and Answer 2006
Ballast - Structural Topics by David Kent
ALS Book - Structural Technology - Berg + Robert Marks
Architects Studio Companion - Allen
Simplified Design of Structural Steel By Harry Potter (oops I mean PARKER)
Graphic Standards - Ramsey
Why Buildings Fall Down - Salvadori
Why Buildings Stand Up - Salvadori
Building Construction Illustrated - Ching
A Visual Dictionary of Architecture - Ching
NCARB - Study Guide 3.1
FTP Site - Thaddeus Seminar (very helpful)
This time it took me Eight weeks of studying (1 or 2 hrs a day at least) .
Lots of practice on calculations, and making sure I know the basics and formulas
before moving to another topic.
And finally, I asked for divine guidance to make me understand what I'm
studying.
For those who are about to take and still taking GS, If I did it I'm sure you can
pass it too....

There's not much of a difference but I would suggest use whatever is latest from Kaplan. I'm sure they try to correct any typo or wrong calcs from the past versions.

I'm using the 2008 one and there are what seem to be brain blocks for me, on page 5 I'm having the hardest time reconciling how they got the angle of 64.1 from tan-angle of 2.06. The best way i've been able to deduce the angle of the resultant was subtracting the horizontal 118#cos from 1 which is not intuitive to me at all.
I think I'm doomed if page 5 is stumping me.

tan-1 2.06=64.1063.........
I was getting screwy stuff as well, then I realized b/c I changed batteries on the ole TI-81 brick, everything reset to Rads instead of degrees.

My brain is a brick and i couldn't for the life of me figure out how to do that on the Microsoft calc. 2.06-hit inv-then hit tan...
Thanks for taking the time to help.

on MS calc, under the "hex" button (upper left), there is an "Inv" box to check when you want to take the inverse of a function. type in 2.06, check the "Inv" box, hit Tan function, you get 64ish degrees.
I have NO idea how this is going to play out on the exam calculator.

I'm in the same boat. Been reading Allen and simplified engineering for architects and builders...by recommendation of someone on the forum. Its a real page turner. I'm not eligable till October 30....but I started studying 2 weeks ago.
I'm doing Mitalski mid sept-mid oct.
