I ned some help on solving Truss reactions. Does anyone know any rules of thumb as far as determining which members are in tension or compression? I have tried to figure out both methods (sections and joints) and I am simply not getting it. It seems in the Method of Sections Method I understand all the vertical reactions when you break it down, but do not understand where horizontal numbers come from. Kaplan wasnt much help. I test in 2 days...Can someone point me in a direction where it is explained clearly?
Thanks

my suggestion: you need to learn how to solve for the individual members using method of joints &/or sections. then work out calcs for some different-typical-simple truss configurations to see how some rules of thumb develop. this can be done this evening.
all diag members have vert & horiz components. chords only have horiz forces. I hope this helps...

| Go on-line (google Marc Mitalski) - he has a site called something like prep-are.com) - You can listen to a free 30 minute discussion on trusses which you will find invaluable. Good luck tomorrow.
