Hi Everyone!
I am currently studying for GS and I am wondering if it is necessary to read up the all the LF related chapters in Kaplan for this particular exam? The reason why I am asking is because I am struggling to read through the GS chapters (with all the crazy calculations) and there are just so much to understand and absorb!! Is there a lot of LF overlap in this exam? And is this how you guys were able to take the two structural exams back to back? How do you guys do it?
Any advice is appreciated!
Thanks,
Kyo

Don't worry about lateral forces. Just concentrate on general structures concepts and understanding what the formulas mean and how they work. I only had 9 calculations that were, for the most part, very straight forward and simple. Don't stress out on the number crunching, it's not worth it. There's simply not enough time to work through the complex calculations that appear in the Kaplan book ... so they won't appear on the exam.
Believe me, I freaked out like you are.... it wasn't worth the anixiety! I think understanding loads and how they work on beams and recognizing different moment and shear diagrams for different loadings is important. Believe it or not, review materials and methods. There were a lot of questions that were taken from that context.

| I would say YES. Even though there are not much overlap between these two exams, it will definitely help you understand some of the subject matter in GS. LF has such a narrow topic and you can scheme through it in one day. I took the LF a few weeks after GS. It worked for me. Good Luck. Last edited on Tue Aug 12th, 2008 08:31 pm by -007-

Thanks mrdcon! Your advice calms me down a bit. I was really freaked out after 2 weeks of reading Kaplan and it feels like a lot information and they just don't sink in. I plan to read Kaplan once to understand the concept and go back an read the second time to memorize things.
How long did it take you to study this subect?
Thanks again for your help!

Yeah, I will try to scheme it thgough. More than likely it will take me a few days to do it........due to my limited study time.
Thanks very much for your input!

Here is the post that I posted right after I took GS. It goes into exactly how I studied and what my exam had in it. Just relax and try to understand the concepts and don't let formulas and calculations get in the way. You'll do just fine! ...

I would like to point out that I had one question on GS that employed some LF terminology in the answers. The question was not about lateral forces, however. It seemed to be aimed at tripping you up if had only a cursory knowledge of the terms.
Just a little warning if you encounter the same thing.
