Hello all~
Took the GS exam a few weeks ago (I was a repeat customer ). Thankfully, it was much easier to get through it this time, so I passed.
Firstly, I took a refresher class at my old school; truely helpful, mainly b/c it jogged my memory for the process of structures, the equations, and if you are like me, rusty at algebra!
Second, I forced myself to try basic beam sizing and calculations for my office, then bounced the calcs off our in-house structural engineers, to see if I was on the right track (I was).
Granted that I am fortunate enough to have an in-house engineering staff, not many firms do.
Try sizing some steel, or wood members, even if it is for something simple like a new roof opening or header.
I memorized the necessary formulas; upon getting started, I immediately wrote them all on my scratch paper (so they were handy).
Read and re-read the books, your notes, and anything else you can lay your hands on.
That's my advice, good luck to you all!
