I feel ridiculous even asking this, but it's been awhile since I took triginometry. If the equation is telling me tan x = a/b how do I solve for x using a calculator. For some reason, I can't quite figure this out.
On that note... does anyone know where I can find a good trig overview? And more so, how much of this I'll really need to know? I can seem to handle it when the angle is given to me, but I have trouble when I need to solve for the angle.

The exams have switched to using a on-screen calculator. I understand that it is similar to the Microsoft Calculator.
I suggest you practice with this.
Not much help, I know. To answer your question though, would be the inverse tangent function to find the angle required.

| Thank you. Any idea whether we'll need to know this stuff, above and beyond simple cos/sin calcs?

In my opinion, that's more than enough.

to get the tan x = a/b on your calculator:
type in x and hit the tan button to get a decimal number and solve away.
if you're solving for x then you need to figured out a/b and take tan to -1 (i can't get my keyboard to type this correctly, it's inverse tangent, sine cos whatever however, my windows calculator doesn't have an inverse tan or just a plain old inverse key on it)
i hope that's what you were asking...

oh, just realized that there's an inv checkbox that you can use to get the inverse tangent incase you need it.
