Tested on Friday, Oct. 3rd: worst exam experience to date!! After studying on-off for 6-9 weeks, I thought I was ready… But the exam was nothing like what I expected. Instead of 10-15 calculations, my exam seemed to have more like 20-25. And some of those worded so strangely that I couldn’t grasp how to solve them. Thoughout the summer, checking into the Forum has helped me enormously, just knowing there are others out there struggling through this. So for what it’s worth, here’s my experience:
6-9 weeks studying on-off 4 hours a day:
Mark Mikalski online course (Fantastic and well worth it!)
Read all of Kaplan twice, focusing on first three chapts
Kaplan questions and answers
Ballast
Architects Studio Companion (for structural types/ scenarios)
Ching: Building Construction Illustrated
Archiflash cards
Reviewed some Allen, Materials and Methods: Concrete, foundations + soils
The exam was more like 20-25 calculations
Some specific code type questions
Structural system best for what type of building
Connections
Beam notching/ holes
Reactions, moments + steel diagrams
No truss calculations
No Trib. Area
Specific soil type questions
Retaining walls
Some concrete/ masonry/ walls type questions
No locate reinforcement questions
One historical building materials question
If I have to take this exam again, I’d go through all the Kaplan questions and final exam until I could do them back to front… Ditto the concepts: back to front, inside-out. Probably start out by reviewing materials and methods… I’d take the Mark Mikalski course over and do all the practice questions + go through all the beam sizing and using the tables until I could do it in my sleep. In the end, I concentrated most on the concepts and less on the calculations. Big mistake! Came out of the exam feeling pretty depleted, and as per usual convinced I failed…
Ahh well, onwards + upwards!! LF in three weeks!!

Took mine on Sunday, I felt like poo poo walking out of the place. This was my second go around. My exam 6 months ago had about 10 calcs which were easy, and as a normal GS first time test taker I felt I was ovrprepared for the calcs but not for the qualitative. I had failed the code/environmental category like most.
This time around, I focused very heavily on qualitative content in studying, while making myself feel comfortable with the calcs.
My test broke down with 18 calcs that were mostly harder than my first go around for sure. Half I couldnt solve. I simply didnt have enough time to do 18 calcs requiring multiple steps.
Most beneficial study materials:
First few chapters of Kaplan
All of the practice questions you can get your hands on
(After doing the Q&A book and the test bank you find out which formulas you 'really' need to know)

| There have been many recommendations for studying the code. Does someone have more specific information? I have my exam tomorrow. I have the "Architect's Studio Companion", ALS and flashcards (and the Q&A). Any input would be great.

Now that I've begun studying for LF, I'm finding several answers to some of my exam problems! Guess I should've studied them simultaneously! Deep breaths + Good luck on the exam...

from poo poo to pass. I'm dumbfounded. Felt way worse coming out of this one than the one I failed.
Don't want to get peoples hopes up for no reason, but no matter how bad you feel like you did don't let yourself get angry/depressed/bitter for two weeks until you see your score.
Good luck to everyone else, my testing experience was the same as mosts of the posts of the past two weeks.
With all my tests done except for a retake of BT, I am beginning to take on all the symptoms of "ARE-transition-BT-is-going-to-screw-me-over-phobia"

Dear All-
That would be a big WOOT!!! BOO YAH!!! PASS!!!!!
The letter had somehow wedged itself between magazines and catalogues, and I only discovered it by chance... Even then, I had determined not to open it till after LF (scheduled for Thurs), but I had read here on the forum of people reading THROUGH the envelope... which is what I did...
Needless to say several jigs + tears around the Kitchen later... If I could pass this MAMA then all y'all can too. Think I studied longer for this one than most, but it was in proportion to THE FEAR... I tried to cover everything, but in the end there was so much material and so little brain space!! Now it feels like a small miracle... Like I said the calcs were a sh*t-show, and the concepts were tricky:-
Repetition, repetition,... do the practice tests until they're coming out your ears, and all the ins and outs/ ups and downs of the concepts/ formulas and you should be fine. Keystone: I can't remember specifics re. LF at this point... think it was property comparison of shear, MF and BF, diaphragms and connections... Which Ballast explains well for LF.
I was convinced I failed, and had entered the three week spiral of tears, anger, bitterness... But like I said if I could do it, YOU CAN TOO!!! Good Luck everyone!!!

Hey guys,
I took GS and LF on friday. I would have to concur that LF was the most straightforward of the Multiple Choice exams while GS was a nightmare. My GS exam had 24 calculation questions! I was hoping to get the mostly conceptual exam that I've heard people talk about but, I knew that with my luck that wasn't going to happen. GS is about speed. My advice for GS is to practice as many calculation problems and balance that out with understanding the statics concepts, and knowing all the various types of structural systems and when to use them. With LF, reading FEMA 454 Chapters 4,5, and 8 were the most help. We'll see in a couple of weeks what happens. I've now taken all 9 exams at this point and will be taking a two month hiatus until I take, hopefully, my last two exams in January and February (PD and ME). Good luck to all who are still in the 3.1 boat like me!!!
