The exam was hard, real hard.
There were some silly questions, but there were tons of calculations...I would say 1/3 of the exam were calculations (ok, exageration, but for sure well more than 20, close to 25)
All of them, except 1, I would have eventually figured out, but I did run out of time.
I went through the exam, calculating the simpler, straight forward, calculations (I took longer than I should have for each calculation...thinking that I had plenty of time)
Entering the test center, I felt prepared enough to pass the exam, but left the testing center unsure (unsure as the other 3 exams I took)
I don't know what to say to help people in regards to the exam....damned if you take the time to answer the calculations as they come, and damned if you answer them at the end, after you answer all the other questions...either way, you might run out of time and not answer some questions...
One thing I can say is remember as many formulas as possible: S=bd2/6, I=bd3/12, Mmax=wl2/8, Mmax=Pab/l, etc.... not having to look them up in the reference page helped immensly...so not only understanding how to use them, but memorizing them as well...
I had maybe still 4-5 questions when I noticed I had about 20 seconds left...when I fumbled through the "review" portion, I eventually had 10 seconds to answer 4-5 questions....had to guess them fast...C, C B C.... lol
There was 1 question I wasn't prepared for though, it was on calculating a masonry foundation wall, how to size the masonry wall and something about tension.
There were some questions straight out of the Kaplan exams, and some information not contained in both the kaplan books and the flashcards...
We'll see how it goes...wondering if I should take Lateral Forces in a couple of weeks (as structures and formulas are fresh in my mind), or if I should wait to see if I pass GS.
Ciao!

| I took the exam two days ago and we have the same experience. I fully understand the concepts and calculations so I thought I was prepared for it but the exam as you said was really hard. I guess you can't really do anything about it but just to keep on trying until you pass. I will take LF in a couple of weeks while GS is still fresh on my mind. I prefer to take LF before my GS result arrives so I won't be distracted if it's a bad news. Don't be discouraged you're not the only one who's going through this. We can pass this beast and be licensed. Good luck!

Will either of you share the study material that you used. I'm beginning to dive in. The goal is to get GS and LF out of the way prior to the holidays. That leaves me one more shot if I mess up.
Right now, I'm reviewing an old ALS book that I was given....but planning on ordering Kaplan, Mitalski online...and who knows what else.

Where you able to use your own calculator, or the one with the program?
Thanks

You are required to use the NCARB provided calculator. Which is very similar if not identical to microsoft windows
Took exam on 10/3 and the test monitor looked up the rules of NCARB and it stated that the only thing able to enter the room with you that is not provided by Prometric is your identification.
Good luck.
I am still waiting on results studying for LF test next Tuesday

Hi elwood! I used Archiflash and enrolled the on-line anytime Mitalski class which was really helpful. I also have the kaplan materials but I did not use it because its too much on calculations. You can also get the thaddeus notes at the ftp site. Good luck!

lcoletta,
I feel like I had the same experience as you (took GS and LF on 9/25). LOTS of calculations, more than I expected, at least 20. I didn't run out of time but didn't have any time to check over anything and rushed through some calculations. I feel like the NCARB calculator really slowed me down also. Remembering as many equations as possible so you don't have to wade through their pages and end up confused is very good advice.
I felt the same way you did after the exams, but I passed them both! Don't be afraid to dive into LF before you get GS results back. Like tops suggest, if the news is bad (hopefully it won't be) it won't discourage you from going ahead and taking it. I felt there was a good bit of crossover and having GS formulas fresh in your mind will be helpful. Even though GS and LF share similar formulas and concepts, some LF concepts are an entirely different animal so if you didn't do so well on GS doesn't necessarily mean you will do bad on LF, and vice-versa.
btw, I used the Kaplan books and flash cards, an old set of Archiflash (I think it was from 3.0), Thaddeus book, old Ballast book, and Graphic Standards to study.
Keep plugging away!! Those were my last 2 exams, and I got my results back in exactly 2 weeks. The state of AL is so good about getting stuff back that I've already received my official registration and license #, and a raise from my boss! It is a wonderful feeling to be a registered architect, after all that we all go through to get there

It has been a while since I bought the Kaplan books. Being that a bunch of people are saying that a lot of the questions are straight from Kaplan, what year books do you guys have? Because i doubt the questions are the same from the books that i have which are dated 2001.

I passed...
I studied using Kaplan's books, and the flashcards....really, that's it.
Now LF...then Building Technology (or else all the exams I have passed would be wasted)
Good luck!

Did any of you use the Kaplan General Structures test bank? If so what was your "pass" rate on the mock exams before going into the real thing . . . I just can't seem to get it above 56% (I'm only going up 1% a week) and studying my butt of every night.

| Yes, I did the Kaplan CD bank. I would do the custom exam only 20 questions at a time and set the passing score at 80%. At first I started scoring 75% but quickly went to 85%. Good Luck!
