1st,you have taken this test enough times to know what it is going to be like, use that to your advantage,2nd,with this being your 3rd shot at it you have to tell yourself over and over again "failure is not an option"

Now for the nuts and bolts(no pun intended),IMO,this test doesn't get into really complicated formulas(you must have noticed that by now),so if you agree, then just stick with the core stuff and do it over and over again until it hurts....think positive, you will do it

I understand how you feel. I've taken and failed GS more times than you have....I'll leave it at that.

IMO, save the time and skip why buildings fall down. I read it and I felt it was a total waste of valuable study time. Do the practice tests and quizzes and flash cards over and over and over......Live and breathe structures until your test arrives. I find myself thinking of formulas and what their components mean from the minute I wake up in the morning. Someone else suggested sticky notes all over to keep reinforcing the info...I think that was a good suggestion.

Take Mitalski's course! It was GREAT. He is a very good teacher and after I did his course everything came easier while I was doing practice probs.

I test on 10/30...so we'll soon see if my confidence is warranted.

Good luck! You'll pass before 4.0!!!!

I have failed and retested a few times and this is not the case....my exams have not resembled each other in ANY way shape or form! Not once. So I wouldn't consider this as an advantage, IMO.

It's amazing how different each exam can be......I gotta wonder how they pool the q's together so that you never get something the same!

I too am taking this test for the 3rd time and although it's different for everyone, what i found was that as good as Kaplan and esp. Ballast are, there are some things not in them - especially stuff on codes and types of structures - I found that the first two chapters of "The Architects Studio Companion" by  Allen/Iano are really helpful in understanding things like waffle slabs and types of systems.  I also found Why Buildings Stand Up helpful in understanding arches and bridges.  (ok so i took finance in college - you may have had this stuff but it's new to me!).  The International Building Code is good for things like the codes on loads which i got wrong the first two times.  Thaddus's course was  great (his 'cheat sheet" at the top of this forum is invaluable.  ) I've heard Mitalski is great - I plan on taking it next week and will let you know - but i think it's worth the $$ to get this over with! good luck!  :)

I've had to take multiple runs at certain tests as well.  When facing that, keep in mind that exposure is your friend.  If the left hook fails, go with the upper cut and if that doesn't work, remember the round house.  The monster will go down as long as you keep fighting.

I started Mitalski's on September 17th. Finished on October 11 which gave me an additional 5 days to go back through and listen to the areas I felt I was weak in. I have yet to go BACK and read through the course outline booklet from marc...been doing a $hitload of Q&A...over and over and over...I think I might have most of the answers memorized at this point...but there is good info that I am retaining by repitition.

I will read through Marc's booklet Monday and Tuesday night and do more practice Q's on my weak areas on Wednesday night....Thursday morning I will skim areas of doubt and then I am off to my test which starts at 11am....I will use the one hour drive to the testing center to just go through the formula's and calcs in my head.

Once I finish, I will rock out all the way home with the tunes cranked loud and get a massage at 3pm and enjoy an evening without books or calcs with my dh and 2 kids!:D

would u suggest taking the GS and LF online courses together or separately?
i plan to take it this weekend.
was it more on teaching calculations? i heard the exams are more on concepts. thanks.
best of luck with the exam. be sure to let us know about the good news in the mail.

I passed LF back in August 2006.....so I didn't take that portion of Marc's course. Marc's course went through the concepts and what each part of formula's and calc's MEAN heavy in the first part.....Principle's i think.....Then in each section he went through concepts then did some calcs too.

Hi L

Last night while going through my books ( i'm starting to study for a dec 2 test date) I found notes from when i walked out of the last GS test i took in may (and obviously didn't pass...) :X

in no particular order this is what was on the test (mostly that i didn't know )

mat slab,waffle slab
composite beams
cost of steel & how is it sold &
types - cheapest to most expensive (this was a wtf for me - how am i supposed to know? shoes yes, steel, no..)
shear plates
compression rings
soil types and list of how they react to water, etc. - most to least stable, etc.
retaining walls, piles & foundations (lots of these)
cantilever beams
no moment or shear diagram where shear is 0 - (although i don't know that i trust this)
ponding on a flat roof - what % is allowable?
slab types
brick veneer - connect vertical (?)
thermal expansion
glad i brought the formulas

(think i was trying to make myself feel better at this point) but definitely memorize the formulas on Thaddius' cheat sheet - top of this forum - I went in and wrote  them all down before i started any questions - was very helpful as i went through  -  basic moment, shear, stress, unit strain, hookes modulus of E, steel +29,000 psi, etc.  helps to have them in front of you when the brain freezes....

no history questions, although i have had some on an earlier one
rad of gyration
know SM & what it is and how to use it.

As i recall there were 10-15 basic moment diagrams, figuring out reactions, but no truss calcs (although you did need to know pratt, howe and the other one that is strait up and down...) and where they were in compression & tension - got this from Thaddius.  Pratt makes a V and Howe makes an A  ( i always figure it's Pratt v. Howe..)  Thaddius is really good for this

I missed on the code parts - there was one question on 1/2 snow and 1/2 something else and live and dead loads  that i didn't know - but think i found it in Ballast section 6? last night.

overturning of retaining wall footing.

Hope this helps...

I HIGHLY recommend taking a structures review course, it helped me immensly.

My method of preparation for a retake (!) was as follows:
  1. Took a GS and a LF class.
  2. In addition to the ALS/Kaplan books, I used "Simplified Engineering for Architects and Builders", a great book with A LOT of problems. I read and practiced from that, I dunno, maybe 150+ problems.
  3. I am fortunate enough to work for a firm that has an entire PE department, so I bounced a lot of questions off of them.
  4. In addition to the discussion of theory, I attempted to apply what I learned to the real world, by designing and calculating beams, welds, bolted connections, etc, for the projects I worked on. I then took my calcs and had one of the PE's review.
  5. I memorized all of the important equations (F=P/A WL squared/8, etc.); this seems difficult, but I committed them to memory long enough to get to the test center, so that I could write them down on the scratch paper.
I know not everyone is fortunate enough to have these types of resources, nut if you can, get them.

This exam is not as hard as it seems. You can pass it. I did.
