I just got done taking the Ballast sample test and in the practice test when you come to a question (for example) that asks you to size a beam for bending stress. The question will tell you to refer to page 200 of the appendix and use table #4. Does the actual exam tell you which table to use for solving the problem? Or do you have to dig through all of the reference material until you come across a page out of the steel manual that is needed for solving this particular problem???

If you have to size a steel beam do they tell you to view table #4 (or whatever) which is then the steel manual page they want you to use? or do you have to flip through several pages in the reference section until you find the steel manual pages and then find the page that you need for the question???

I think you have to be familiar enough with what tables to use and and how to use them.  This is how I am approaching it.

I'm with you IME.

The reference tables for me were almost not necessary but that doesn't mean others won't find a different scenario altogether.

I think being familiar with the steel book, truss tables, bolt tables and wood grade tables is important but it's not something that should have any fear attached to it. Everything was familiar and straightforward, unlike the questions wording. :)

I asked this question regarding allowable are calcs for another exam - the response was "the information will be provided".  Which is exactly what happened in my experience so far (haven't taken structures yet).  As in, the table wasn't provided, but the information I needed was.  So my take is: know what the tables are in general, the information they provide and how to use that information - that way you'll know what to do with what's provided.  Don't try memorizing the tables - there's enough to memorize without that.
