That's right folks, you heard it...

I'm back for another 4 weeks of studying for GS, and will be taking LF a week later...

This time, I'll be going without the Thaddeus seminar, since I did that last year, and I already have all of his materials...

Any advice on how to study for this re-take would be much appreciated...

So far, I got the following sources:

- Old ALS books on Struct. Technology 1 & 2

- Thaddeus Seminar notes

- Marty's notes from the FTP site

- Archiflash cards for GS & LF

- OLD ALS PP exams

And I wish I could afford Mitalski's online course but I can't this time..oh well....guess I just gotta bite the bullet....

My plan of attack is to read over the general concepts the 1st week, then review and get familiar with the appropriate calc's during the 2nd week...and just continue to review calc's, concepts, flash cards and practice exams until test time comes...

Any thoughts on how I might be able to improve this approach?...

Cheers to future success,

Q..

Quiksilver...I'm right there with you. I'm trying to figure out where to start with my GS studying again. Like you, I have taken Thaddeus seminar and with the addition of the Ballast book, I have the same study material as you. It is so hard to read the same material again. Someone on another post suggested the book 'Building Structures' by Ambrose. I considered purchasing it but I'm not sure if it is worth the money? And I am not sure I want to spend all that money on Mitalski's seminar after already attending Thaddeus' seminar. I would like to hear what others did for their re-take on GS.

Greetings,

Well, it would be nice if there were others out there that could give us some insight, as I've already started reading through the OLD ALS Struct Tech #1.....and I'm not paying too much attention the calc's...

Last time I studied for GS, I tried to figure out the calc's as I was reading the books, and that tripped me up....I figure the info that I obtained from the Thaddeus seminar, along with the 1 page 'cheat sheet' that he gave out is enough for the calc's portion of this exam...

OH Quik, well I am a long time fan of yours. I've read so many of your posts and have benefitted from them so far. I wanted to give a little test taking advice which might help you out. When you get those tricky questions with answers

A. I, II

B. II, III, IV

C. IV only

D. I, V

Write down on your scratch sheet quickly ABCD, then as you read each item cross out the totally wrong answers. After reading so many of your posts in the last year, I am convinced that Test Taking in general is where you need to improve. You are intelligent enough to pass these god forsaken tests...I just think that focusing on the question could be an area of improvement for you.

Ballast, old ALS, Archiflash and the FTP links (FEMA, etc)

Any advice ? Good luck to you !

Suz

1. Start off with reading old ALS books.....try and get thru those within 1 week.....

2. In conjunction with reading the ALS books, also start reading ARCHIflash for both GS & LF....as I've been told that this source is important for this exam.

3. Study and absorb this 'Structural Guide' document from D. Thaddeus, shortcut to post below (I would study this AFTER you get thru ALS & Archiflash, so it somewhat makes sense to you):

http://www.areforum.org/forums/forum2/738.html

4. In addition to studying the document mentioned in item 3, also download and absorb as much as humanly possible, all PDFs contained on this page of the FTP (Martys seminar notes from the Thaddeus Seminar):

http://www.areforum.org/guest/General%20Structures/AREseminar/AREseminar/seminar%20notes/

(Please note the item on this page that relates to the 'Selection of Structural Systems'.....which should be used hand in hand with Item #4 mentioned below)

5. Also pull & study..This document from the FTP, known as ' Selection of Structural systems', from the Architects Studio Companion, shortcut below:

http://www.areforum.org/guest/General%20Structures/must%20read/systems/

6. I also found some good advice on this post too...which is back from August of this year:

http://www.areforum.org/forums/forum2/58755.html

7. FTP doc's are good...so I'd go over those for at least 1-1.5 weeks...prior to exam time..

8. Lastly, drill yourself on Practice Exams to get used to the exam format....and if you have access to it, study the heck out of the Kaplan Q & A book....and Kaplan test bank, as I hear many of the questions on the exam itself are very similar in format to the questions contained in these sources.

***I would only read Ballast as a refresher if you still have time before test day...since I'm told that the wording is a bit crummy, and not as concise as Kaplan is...though it is from a different source than Kaplan, which could be benefitial...

That's probably all you need to pass this exam.....and keep in mind....since there shouldn't be more than 20-25 calc's, I'd focus my studies on concepts and theories behind the calc's and how structural systems relate to such items....

That's all I got for now..good luck to you Suz!...

Cheers to future success,

Q..

PS - If you can afford to take Marc Mitalski's on-line course...

http://www.prepareinc.us/course_overview.htm

..I would take that too....it's about 30 plus hours for GS & LF combined..but I hear it's great for the 1st time GS test takers....good luck!

I would take a look at ncabs list of ref books, see if you can get them from your local libary and match the areas with the exam to the content in those ref books. Also take a look a ballast 6th ed

Also take a look a ching visual dictionary of architecture, and AGS, I have fallen short of passing this exam more then a cople of time, and I have seemed to have failed the same part genaral structures principles, so I am taking a different approach this time, by just reviewing all note, flashcards, and taking as many practice exams that I can take, I have about 3 weeks before I take this exam , and today I had an engineer tell about  parker/ambrose book simplifed mech and strength of materials, so I going to take a peek at that and see if I can finally ace this thing come Dec.

Your plan sounds good.

If you didn't take my approach in your past studies, I'd give it a try.....

More than likely you'll pass next time you take this.....if you just focus on your weak areas...

Cheers,

Thank you Quik for the wonderful feedback - this really helps me put things in perspective !

I will  go thru all the references you've given. I certainly cannot afford to buy any more study material - Just got layed off last month, our company is on the verge of shutting down because of the current economy. All the more reason for a rush to get licensed - the market is very competetive right now where I live.

Good luck to you !

hi Q,

I am retaking GS as well. Last time I took it was in 2004. So it's sort of a fresh start for me.

I have the materials as yours and studied on them. After my 2-week-don't-understand-a-thing study.....I decided to enroll Matalski's On Line Anytime Classes. Now I finally understand what those material taking about, also feel more ready to go for the exam.  My GS exam is in early Dec. will let you know if it works out well.

Besides GS, I still have ME to go, which is my worst nightmare. :?

good luck... to all of us!

GS is my last exam and this is my only retake so far if I pass BT and BP. I have taken David's seminar last year. Do you recommend taking the online seminar from Mitalsky?

It was suggested by David to study chapter 16 of IBC or simplified version of it in Edward Ching's book for the code. If you guys have any suggestion on the material I would greatly appreciated.

Yes! I think Mitalski's on-line courses are good. thanks to people who posted on the forum.

You can do a keyword search on Forum, think you can get more opinion on it.

IBC CH.16 was also suggested in Marc's classes.

I also think Archiflash is good.
