I was guessing, just guessing, on half of them. So hard. The hardest test yet. Do not underestimate this exam. I studied for 6 weeks, thought I was good, and have been blown away by this afternoon.
needle beam and underpinning & the difference between the 2 of them. (3 questions)
know about composite floor & how the parts of it interact
There were no crazy vocabulary words like on MM, so I appreciated that.
Calculations were 25% of my exam. That is a big portion, so do not think you can just skip calcs, or not study them very much. I think they are very important to the success of your exam. With that being said, there are really only about 6 different formulas you should be memorizing.
I had to know the K value of a column! like memorized! Like I am going to memorize the little K value chart...Really?
The reference stuff sucks. It has all sorts of weird, complicated, jacked up versions of the simple formulas we are learning. Just memorize the simple formulas everyone talks about. Units are everything on this exam, they really put in every possible version of the math y/12 & Yx12.
I got the crazy Newton, Meter reactions question. Come on! I know that they give you the equivalencies in the reference section, but for some reason I just could not get my Newtons & meters to equal my pounds per square foot, and it just angered me. I'll tell you what you can do with your Newtons....
I really only had one soil question....
Most questions on spans and use were pretty simple if you know your different structural systems. Joists vs. slabs vs. beams, etc...
Ultimate Force design vs. Working Stress Design
Lateral forces tomorrow...

Isn't a needlebeam used in the underpinning process?

Thanks for the feed back Alley Arch. Giving mine tommorrow. Do not feel that I know enough but have postponed mine already so will give it a try now.
Did you have to refer to tables or were they provided with the questions?
Good luck for your Lateral forces.
Thanks,

Yes that is correct about the Needle beam & Underpinning. I never thought I would see both terms in one question.
I referred to the reference section probably ten times, hoping something in there would jog my memory about other stuff. They did not give me formulas in any problems, I was expected to find them in the reference or have them memorized.
By the way, Lateral Forces is WAYYYY easier.

I felt the same way last week, Alley... as if I had studied for this in English and the exam was given in Crimean Gothic. Totally blanked! I dread getting that letter.
LF on 12/2.

I would give this advice to anyone listening! Study for Lateral and General at the same time, with a 40/60 split in your time. Pay way more attention to General Structures. Lateral Forces only has 10 calculations, and they are not hard. Take the exams one after another as soon as possible, don't wait two months in between.
General Structures will scare the crap out of you, but Lateral will re-inforce that you are supposed to be an Architect!
If I were to do it again (which I still might) I would spend a lot more time on this forum reading others experiences, because General has many curve balls (like MM). Lateral is pretty straight forward (like CD), and out of the book, so (IMO) the forum can only help a little for that exam.
