A question in Ballast asks:
Which of the following is usually NOT checked when designing floor joists for heavy loads?
The answer is "Vertical Shear". Why wouldn't the answer be "Horizontal Shear"?
Thanks.

| because if its going to fail its going to fail in horizontal shear first. so from what i gather thats the critical one to figure out.

Thanks.
I think I'm looking beyond the "joist", and to the connection to vertical support as well, where vertical shear would be applicable.
