i'm taking the mitalski online seminar and recommend it highly.
his GS seminar is divided into seven courses: loads, sections & forces, trusses, steel design, wood design, concrete design, foundations, followed by a q&a time slot. each course averages three-five hours, but the great thing is you can go back and replay sections. mark also makes himself available via email or phone for questions.
if you have the time and can afford it, it's worth every minute and dime. after completing the first course, i'm actually liking this subject; whereas before, structures seemed like a monster to me.

| I agree as well! Marc is an excellent teacher. If only I had been taught this way in college... Now that I'm about half way through the chapters, I feel much more at ease with taking this exam! of course I'll need to practice and review other material outside of Marc's online course. He presents the material in such a way that is very managable and easy to understand! well worth the money.

the mitalski online courses are split between gs and lf; although i think you can purchase both as one package for a cheaper cost. unlimited access is permitted for a total period of four weeks; which is why i opted to purchase them separately since my exams are two weeks apart.
all the information is available at: http://www.prepareinc.us/education.htm just click on the general structures text.
it also looks like prep a-r-e is or will be offering MEP online courses for anyone who's interested.

hey slaw~
access was immediate as soon as my paypal account cleared.
marc provided access to the online course and forwarded all the support docs. once i printed those out, i made a binder and as i was going through the online course noted the time on each page that coincided with the course discussion (someone recommeded this on a previous post). it was really helpful when going back through the course or if i wanted to review specific formulas or topics.
the course has given me alot of confidence and clarified the equations and formulas. additional study material would be needed (and marc lists those). while the seminar is focused on the calculations, he provides a good amount of material comparisons, systems selections and practical examples.

Thank you SolidCore! I've already started the online course and so far, I really like it. Marc recommended a book called Architect's Studio Companion, which I don't have. Not sure if I should buy it or not..........Do you have that book? Do you think it's helpful to have it?

yes, i have the book. actually bought it while preparing for building technology (bt)---it's ok, but i haven't used it yet for gs.
the companion book is probably a good one to have for your reference library and there's a good amount of code information in it. someone mentioned, in a previous gs post, that it helped them with foundations for gs; so, maybe when i get to that subject i'll find it more useful.
on another note regarding recommended study materials - marc recommended building structures by james ambrose. i managed to get an earlier edition (1988) and i can't say that i've found it useful--not yet anyway.
if you or anyone you know has figured out why it's a useful book for this exam, i'd like to hear back. i heard ambrose used to write questions for the exam back in the day; maybe some of the exam diagrams are pulled from his book, so i'll review them. (i'm at the point now where pictures and diagrams are about all the studying i have left in me).
slaw, long story short, if you have the coin to buy the studio companion it's helpful; but i don't think you should worry about not passing if you don't have it...and you've already passed bt so you're in good shape!

Thank you for your reply. GS and LF are my weak subjects. That's why I'm a bit nervous about these two exams. I would rather be over prepared than under. I'll take a look at work and see if they have Building Structures. I prefer not to spend anymore money on books! I might check the public library also. I did ask my friend who passed GS last year. She told me she didn't read the Architect's Studio Companion book.
Another quick question: are you using IBC 2003 as one of your study guides? My friend has 2006 but it seems like Marc recommended 2003.
Anyway, not really feeling I'm in a good shape. I'm having trouble passing ME! If I pass GS and LF, I'll feel much better....................also, can't squeeze in PD before the end of this year. I'll have only one shot next year!!! PRESSURE!

i am so with you...gs/lf are my weakest subjects--hell, this mitalski seminar is like my first introduction to structures. i'm sure fortunate to have found it.
your big advantage, will all this transition, is that you have bt done--that's gonna save you from having to retake some exams you've already passed--a big sigh of relief right there.
have you scheduled gs/lf yet?
i'm taking gs in about 10days and am just finishing up mitalski then i'll look at some code information. will use the 2003 code; fortunately, my work place has it, same with the steel manual.
my worry is time, on one hand i want to take it soon after finishing the seminar; but on the other, i'd like more time to review other materials. have been reading kaplan and using flashcards (structures and materials and methods). if you can get your hands on a ballast book or kaplan, going over materials and methods (especially concrete/wood/steel) might help with some of the general concept questions.
as far as mep, phhffftt!!! fahgettaboudit for now. stay focused on passing gs/lf.

Just curious as to what happens after 4 weeks, and you really need to go back to a portion of the video to review something, or you don't have time to do it all in 4 weeks?
My schedule allows me to start studying at 9:00pm, and go for a few hours before I turn into a tired, puddle of drool. Other times, there may be work or other commitments - work, etc., so I just don't know if 4 weeks would do it for me.
. . . Do you have to pay for the whole thing again?

I do feel relieved that I pass BT earlier this year. However, I have to pass ME, GS and LF, so that I don't have to repeat part of the BT in 4.0. Anyway, we're all under alot of pressure to get them done before the transition. Stay positive!!!!
My gs is on the 16th, and lf is on the 22nd. I'll try to borrow IBC 2003 from work then. I know they have copies laying around. My friend told me to stay focus on the general concept. Also, she mentioned there're overlap btw gs and lf. Do enough practice exams, I found that helpful. GOOD LUCK!!!!
I'm going to study with my friend next week. I hope this will help too!

yeah, timing is everything for the seminars. after the initial four weeks are up you can renew in two week increments for $50. the gs seminar is about 30 hours total, but it's taken me more like 60-100 'cause i'll stop to take notes or rewatch sections over and over.
mitalski makes it interesting by connecting the formulas with the concepts, so it goes by quickly. of course, my family doesn't see it that way but that's a whole 'nother story.

"Additional Access to the "On-Line Anytime" sessions beyond one month is an additional $50.00 fee for each two-week period."
