I'm begining to study for the 4.0 ARE, starting with PPP.  I'm using old Kaplan (2007) books that our office bought. I'm trying to figure out what materials to study in the old books. Looking at NCARB's ARE Transition Chart below http://www.ncarb.org/are/40/reversechartweb.pdf it appears that I need to study the Pre-design and Site Planing for both the PPP and SPD tests. What materials apply to PPP and what apply to SPD? Any other suggested study materials would be helpful. Thanks.

See my post in the SPD section
http://www.areforum.org/forums/forum22/58539.html
Some of us who were starting out decided that studying for both of these at the same time made sense, given the info from the chart. That's basically what I did, and it worked out well (2 passes!)
When you're just getting started, it's hard to imagine how un-defined the content areas really are. I mean, Kaplan is a good start, but you'll want to get info from various sources.
Honestly, the collected posts around here (and on FTP) are your best bet. You can check out Kaplan and Ballast tables-of-contents online for free, which will at least give you an idea how things are split up between these 2 exams, but it's not like these publishers have any inside information. Also, there is a lot of overlap between all the MC exams, not just these 2. It'll make a lot more sense once you dive in.

rkeytech,

Did u take PPP?  P or F?

I am in the same boat as you are as I have all the 2007 Kaplan books.  I decided to restart the long road with PPP.  Currently reading Kaplan Pre-Design and will probably read Site Planning, I will study the recommended AIA docs A201, B141, A101, C141 and IBC plus the NCarb Practise Vignette.  Hopefully this should get me well prepared for test No.1.

Your thoughts...

If you have access to the Handbook of Proffessional Practice, I would recommend reading a few chapters out of that, especially anything about design-build.
