Just took the PPP + SPD in consecutive days, Nov 10 + 11. First two sections taken, so I cannot compare it to focusing on one section. I found it challenging, but my guess is that it is worthwhile. If one was extremeley bold they could take on CDS as well. I will likely set my sights on that one after Thxgvg.
A lot of MC overlap, the section titles tell of the emphasis, no big surprises, only a few WTF questions. Glad I took them together.
Lessons learned about studying:
Primers were good: Kaplan history, code, accessible design, a little LEED review, very little AHPP. Started these about Oct 01.
64-bit Vista is bad: Limits convenient study guide and practice problems. Buyers beware if you are considering a new notebook during your study stint.
Losing job is bad: Seriously, everybody beware of the economic trends. This could be an unexpected and untimely reality facing young, aspring architects in the midst of preparing for AREs. Preparing for two sections, being released, trying to find a new FT job, and trying to manage your unfinished office work is challenging.
Ballast seems to be good prep material: I feel I am getting most everything covered for MC with Ballast 4.0. Sample questions are certainly more challenging than actual exams. I usually do all text, cross-refernced chapters, and sample questions twice.
Don't plan to accomplish gainful studying between short-order exams: i had 28 hours between finishing the first and starting the second. I wish it had been less than 24 with only casual review time in between. 2 or 3 hours would have been good too if I had everything covered before sitting for the first. The build-up to the first exam is tiring and effective cramming is likely hit-or-miss. In my case, I point the finger at me.
I have spoken too much. Good luck.

Oof! That's tough! I took those 2 one week apart, which was challenging. Mostly it was physically grueling. I planned to take CDS within a couple of weeks, but ended up waiting 6 weeks for it, which worked out well for me. I definitely like the strategy of bundling those exams. The graphic on CDS is a breeze, but the material may be tough depending how much you know already.
Good luck!
