MC:
I felt confident on about 80% of the questions. A lot of overlap with PPP. Some topics I wish I'd studied closer:
- Site Lighting
- Contractual responsibilities
- Zoning
Site Design Vignette
My vignette was pretty different from the NCARB practice exam, a bit more challenging. I grappled for a direction for a bit longer than I was comfortable with, but I feel very good about the outcome of my eventual solution. What I can say from my experience:
- Take that upfront time. You don't want to find yourself too far into the execution of the drawing before you find something doesn't work. If you've practiced the vignettes and can execute quickly, you'll have time to put thought in upfront. Good placement of the buildings, parking, and outdoor space is vital.
- Definitely take careful notes on the program as you're reading through it. Refer to the notes while you're working on the drawing. When you practice, do it this way, too.
- Be aware of changes to the program: wind direction, adjacency of HC parking spaces, distance of drives from buildings, whether the outdoor space is or is not part of the walkway system. Each element can be different from what you're used to. Don't make assumptions based on your practice vignettes.
- In the practice vignettes, I was always trying to remove the least amount of trees. As long as you're under the program limit for tree removal, take out all the trees you need to make your solution work. Taking a tree out might even help you fulfill a few other program requirements (killing two birds with one stone, so to speak).
- You're given 120 minutes to complete both vignettes. While you can divide this time as you see fit, NCARB suggests 75 minutes for SD and 45 for SG.
Site Grading Vignette
- Mine was, I think, at least as easy as the NCARB practice vignette.
- Again, don't assume your exam's program will be the same in any aspect to the practice vignette. Topo lines might represent 2' change instead of 1' change in elevation.
Good luck to everyone studying for SPD. Next up for me: Structural Systems...
