I took the LF Monday (6/18/2007) morning at 8am.  After going to bed at 9:45 the night before, I woke up at 2:15am, thinking about it. I was stressing out, basically for a few reasons:
  1. Posts on this forum that mention long-winded, riddle-type questions and an overall “What’s this all about” mindset.  Some people can be so pessimistic!
  2. Only having 1 week to find resources, read, prep notes, review, try to work through mock exams, etc.
  3. Not having read all the resources I found, and wishing I had more time to read them.
I got to the office about 4am, and started reviewing things again.  Thoughts crept in, about 6am, I called the wife, and asked for her thoughts on punting this one, and rescheduling it in a few weeks.  She, as always, was reassuring, letting me know that I was ready and able.  So, I told her I would change my thought pattern and go take it.  I got to the test center about 7:15 am, and studied in the car for another 30 minutes.  Then I went in, and while waiting the 25 minutes to get to my computer, my mind was blank - clean trace fresh off the roll.  Always a pleasant feeling!

I am one that follows the exam security rules a little more conservatively than others, so you won't find any tidbits of "get deep into this" here.  But, here is what I can offer:

What I read:
  1. ALS - The old version, didn’t make a difference, it’s about understanding what influences the earthquake makes on a building, not in memorization of a formula.  When it comes to the seismic shear formula, look at the old one, look at the new IBC one, and know what are the contributing factors for developing the amount of seismic shear.  Understand the concepts and principles.
  2. FEMA 454, Chapters 4 & 5.  Explains many of the same concepts from ALS/Kaplan, but in a different way, with many examples (both diagrams and photos).  Plus it discusses real earthquake situation and shows you what happened in buildings that failed. Some have had problems finding FEMA 454, probably should be handed to each student as they graduate, or at least on the reference shelf of most firms, since it is called, "Designing for Earthquakes: A Manual for Architects".  Here is the link:  http://www.fema.gov/library/viewRecord.do?id=2418   It is a very large pdf if you download the whole thing, so, if you can't, scroll down to grab each chapter separately.  I downloaded the whole thing, and will probably read more chapters down the road, quick and easy read, but very informative.
  3. IBC 2003, Chapter 16, Sections on Earthquakes and Wind.  Good to know what the codes we are following today say.  You don’t have to read it word for word, or memorize things, just know what it is saying, have a basic understanding, and perhaps something important from it will be on your test.
  4. Why Buildings Stand Up - This is a great "I'm taking a break book".  I used this one more for the GS test, but still informative for LF.  Short, Quick read, didn't have to read the whole thing, just the important chapters.  I won't tell you which chapters are important, look at the Table of Contents and figure it out, a task which should help your research and test taking skills.
  5. Why Buildings Fall Down -  Again, another great (short, quick) book for those study breaks.  This one is more informative when it comes to LF, as it is typically the affects of lateral forces that cause structural failure.  There are at least two chapters in there that are pertinent to earthquake and wind issues.  Especially good for discussing real events.  Or you can even read the great story of the B-25 that hit the Empire State Building in 1945, which I found interesting in a Post-911 world.  I didn't read those two particular chapters (earthquakes/ wind) as closely as I should have before the test.  Probably should have!  Again, use the Table of Contents to figure out which Chapters are important, I cannot spoon feed you everything!
  6. Some other small items, but very good found on the LF FTP site.
What I wanted to read, but didn’t:
  1. Simplified Building Design for Wind and Earthquake Forces by Ambrose/Vergun.  I requested it from the library.  It wasn’t at my branch, so I asked for a transfer from another branch on the upper north side of town.  It didn’t show up in time, received notice today at 11am that I can go pick it up at my branch now.  Um, yeah!
What I didn’t read, but should have:
  1. Day 4 of the David Thaddeus GS Seminar Notes posted under the General Structures FTP site.  Kicking myself now as I review them and see things that would have helped and made a few questions a little easier to answer and quicker to wade through.  That seminar must really be something.  Go to the FTP site and pull all 4 days prior to taking GS or LF.  Link:  http://www.areforum.org/guest/General%20Structures/AREseminar/AREseminar/seminar%20notes/
Overall, I think I did pretty good and am hoping for the best.  Guess I will know in about 3 weeks.

I thought the test was fair, but a little demanding.  You should really know those concepts of what things effect seismic loading, from the way the earthquake acts, to how it travels, and how a building deals with the internal stress placed on it, depending on the lateral force resistance system it is using.  I had a few more calculation problems than others mention.  So, any calculation in the ALS, I would know how to do them, such as:
  1. Base Shear Distribution
  2. Overturning
  3. Max Diaphragm Shear and Chord Forces - you should know how to calc this, but also the ends, outs and upside-downs of how diaphragms really work.
Go over the Earthquake and Wind Design Examples in the ALS, and learn to understand them, what they are telling you about the design, as well as, how to work through them.

I will tell you this, you are not just being tested on what you have read in the items above and how well you can regurgitate them.  You will be required to THINK through a few of the questions.  You will not get them all right, just do your best, and you might surprise yourself.  Good luck!

Oh, and don't forget about Wind, I probably focused too much on Earthquakes only!

THanks for the post!!!

By the way, for FEMA 454, is this the typo of FEMA 154 (rapid visual screening or something?)? I didn't find 454.

I think it is an excellent idea to take a look at IBC. That's what I will do tomorrow lunch time in the office.

I think it's a great post exam review. Thanks a lot.

I am taking mine on Saturday. I was awarded two days off from work (thursday and friday) after two weeks of slavery... Hopefully I can get lots of study done during those two days.

I took this yesterday as well and feel horrible about it. I felt prepared going in but by the time I left I felt like my frontal lobe had been sucked out through my temples.

I think my problem is that I spent a bunch of time studying the wrong stuff. I had no questions on overturning, nothing on chord force, very little on wind in general, mostly seismic. I had some connection questions, soils, retaining walls, etc.

Oh well, it happens. I will say this, I know I got some right, I know I got some wrong, I just hope the ratio is in my favor.

-- reading your after-thoughts, it truly reminds me my emotions the day before sittigng on exams or even a couple hours before.  hardly confident so far except for the graphic divisions..

i wish you a big pass letter!

thanks for the good informations.  i agree Christopher Arnold's writings are "so" helpful; actually i tried to get his book, "building at risk", but couldn't..  so i surfed internet to get some internet versions and after have read i've found extremly crispy and helpful, including the two chapters at fema 454.

a couple writings--brief and easy to read;

i hope it helps for all forum members.

--b/t/w, now i'm worrying about calculation stuff.....hummm...

i can never judge myself at all whether i'm ready for sitting on exams or not...  (--any clues from your experience?)

Hi, sixofnine, i've read your post;

http://www.areforum.org/forums/view_topic.php?id=25110&forum_id=10&highlight=the+Heat+or+losing+it+2%2F3rds+of+the+way+in

Ha~~  You're almost in a same boat w/ me; i'm 7/9 down and LF and MM left-

actaully so far my main studying materials were basically 98% old ALS, Ballast, Flashcard and NCARB study guide.  But now i'm kinda overwhelmed by huge amount of resources...Fema, etc.  never the less, none of these many of resources are "fixed" knowledges, it's ever "to-be-evolved" or "has to be evolved" animal.  i don't think the exam will cover the most updated inelastic, dynamic analysis/approach of the NEHRP or FEMA, which is a main senario of the fema 454. (i've skimmed through that curious about what's new, what they are talking about now.)   So we, ARE test takers , what could/would be the legendary text books for us?? (-- i think there could be quite a bit to talk about this especially for this LF exam.  as i'm finding that there are huge gaps from the current cutting-edge-tech and the old ALS and Flashcard. But the sad thing is we'd need to cover one or both.)

i think i'd need to cut the chase now. but i'm again very nervous to sit on the exam..as always..... :(

nyc_arch,

Let's not get too far ahead of ourselves...I really wish we would get results as we walk out of the testing center.  It's so hard to see all those nursing students being handed their results as soon as they come out of the room.  But, I only took the test 2 days ago...wait, is that it?  Are you sure, because it feels more like 4!

Oh, I would add:  Make sure you do as many Mock Exams as you can get your hands on.  A good test of what you really know/understand and they help you to learn.  Especially if the answers are explained with some reason as to how they arrived at the solution.  It's great to do this about 2-3 days prior to the exam, see where you need to concentrate on learning.  Someone asked in a post above about how to know if you are ready to sit for an exam, and I would say that doing the mock final exams is a good barometer.

You will never get a 100% on an ARE exam.  These tests are about ensuring that you meet the minimum qualifications for being a licensed architect, and the government being willing to entrust you with life safety issues of the public.  Whether you pass by 1 or 20, it doesn't make a difference, the test says that you met the minimum requirement.  Of course, you will never know.  I wondered how I passed the ME test, as it was so taxing, only using the ALS guide to prep.  Just because I passed it though, doesn't make me the "all-knowing, all-seeing" ME expert.  I know I still have a lot to learn in the MEP realm, but I know enough for today, and will learn more tomorrow.  That's why there is the Continuing Education program in order to maintain your license.  It's all about continued learning, and staying up with the new technologies, but understanding the concepts never goes out of style.

Got to go study...

6/9

6/9,

I don't know what is happening inside NCARB. I didn't have any trouble with getting result letter until the recent computer glitch. (they usually surprised me by sending the letter so much sooner than I expected) Then since that computer grading problem in April, my SP took 10+ weeks and GS took 6+weeks. I had to keep bugging NCARB (ARE ops) because they had the result (they told me they have it over the phone), but for some reason, they won't send the result to the state board. I called ARE ops about twice a week for about two weeks for those exams, and they always said, "we mailed it today (or yesterday)". But state board never got it, until they actually got it. The best time to call ARE ops is in the morning. Chances are they will answer without too much of waiting.

Good luck on dealing with them.

In this day and age, why can't they scan the results and email them to me, and cc my board at the same time.

If my office operated the way the state board does, we'd be closed by now!  But, that's true of most government agencies!

Keep trying to tell myself that they won't arrive today, so I can actually breathe and work today!

Nothing today for me either...at least there are no upcoming postal holidays!

Praying for letters tomorrow!
