I know a square plan shape is best in resisting earthquake. What about between triangle vs. round , which is better . Please explain. I'm getting different opinion from friends. Is there any link in this forum that further discuss this?

this is a guess but in my mind circle would be better because it has a pair of axis of symmetry vs a triangle having one.

either way i doubt you'd see this on a test.  but this is my opinion....

There was a question i came across asking which was a better plan, a circle or square.  The square was better, they explained, because it has more material further from its center.  So if the triangle fits on top of the circle without overlapping it, I'd say the circle is better.

I found in one website stating that circle shape is the ideal shape. So,???
I know it's best for wind designbut not sure for seismic design. I am geting confused now.

"The more compact of a plan, the better the stability. This means a square plan is better than a rectangular one, and a circle is better than square. L-Shape plans are less stable." -from construction manual for earthquake- resistant houses built on earth by  Gernot Minke.

...i believe i read it somewhere the circle, in general, is inherently more stable than most other shapes

as per Kaplan test bank  - square is the best form to resist earthquake. i guess circle comes second.

If you look at it from pure constructibility standards, then yes. A square is better than a circle. Think of it: steel and concrete framing in a simple, square arrangement vs. what? A faceted array of steel beams to mimic a circle?? Yuck. I immediately see these steel beams linked together like cattle cars of a freight train going around a mountain. No stability there, people.

Incidently, have you seen that guy who does those commercials? Did he eat too many paint chips when he was a kid or what??

In my opinion, triangle v round is beyond the scope of the exam.

I would expect that should this sort of question appear on the exam, it will have a fairly obvious answer -- such as comparing a simple shape with a complex one.
