I am looking for solid suggestions for study material for the Lateral Forces Exam.  I have taken it twice and failed in spite of having breezed through General Structures.  I used the Kaplan guide both times and found it to be worthless.  I have to say that 80 percent of the exam questions were not covered significantly by the study guide.  I am taking the exam in California.  Does anyone have any suggestions for study guides, seminars etc. that will help me to pass this once and for all before July 2009?  I really don't want to take general strcutures again when the new exam format kicks in.

Thanks

The last day of Thaddeus' seminar is focused on Lateral Forces...  I found that class to be a huge help for me, personally, for both subjects...  And if you sign up for the course, I would talk to him and see if he can give you any additional specifics on things to study above and beyond the general information covered towards the end of the seminar - he's a great guy and seems genuinely interested in everyone's success.

Marc Mitalski's class is supposed to be really good, as well, although I can't speak from personal experience:

http://www.prepareinc.us/mitalski.htm

It's an online course, so no travel is required and you can take it at your leisure.

Not sure if you've used the FEMA documents (454) in your stufy efforts before, but you might find those a lot more helpful than the Kaplan stuff...  I agress that the Kaplan ALS stuff is worthless for this one...

I think that FEMA 454 Chapters 4, 5, & 8 were the "mandatory" reading assignments from the Thaddeus review course, although I've seen a lot of other postings from people saying that they read the whole document and it was all helpful.

Good luck!

I also found that I had to look through the IBC to get some of the terminology, specifically Seismic Design Categories. Look there for definitions, which categories are more restrictive, but don't worry about the calculations.

I used my old IBC (2000?). The definitions haven't changed that much, so I think 2008 should be fine. Remember it is concepts, not specifics.
