| I'm having some issues with this one. My impression is that one vents all of the other stacks, and the other one vents one fixture, but am having a hard time really telling the difference. Any hints you guys have for how to remember this? Thanks!

I personally think about assigning words to first letters example
Stack starts with S- what other words that starts with S makes you remember what it means can be "SH.." can be "soil" so stack vent is related to soil and it is the section above the highest fixture.
Vent stack it start with V what other word that start with V gives you a hint what it means and so on for this one i chose "Volatile" which hints for gazous odors etc..so it is the stack that helps prevent gazous and stinking odors from flowing from the plumbing fixtures by releasing the pressured air inside the pipe and letting the P-trap work correctly.
hope it helped and i didn't add to your confusion

This is how I remembered them:
Soil-stack-vent = soil stack belongs with stack vent.
Vent stack is left over and is the - well - vent stack only - no 'soil' in it.

thank you both. i tired to explain my reasoning of the difference to my partner ( a non-archi) who didn't understand, but as long as i do...
meanwhile, it looks like i'll have a few more days to study - some mysterious 'form' was missing from my 'file' so that the test was unable to load onto the computer. argghhghgh. i was so looking forward to the stress being gone for just a little while.

Here's how I think of it. If you look at a diagram that shows the two, you'll notice that the Vent Stack is a series of vents grouped together. If you picture several floors of fixture vents, you'll see that Vent Stack is a stack of vents.
Also, you can substitute a word like 'book' stack, it's a stack of books. Vent Stack, it's a stack of vent's . Hope this makes sense.

I finally figured out a way to remember this. Similar to Agalia. The stack vent is the Soil Stack Vent (kind of like the Before and After in Jeopardy: Soil Stack - Stack vent = Soil Stack Vent.) This is because the soil stack BECOMES the stack vent above the highest fixture.
