i am fresh off of the ME exam 3.0. i have to say that it wasn't as hard as i thought it would be and there weren't really any hidden "tricks" or real wacked out questions that didn't seem to have any answer - like i have come across on other exams.
i did not have very many pictures from MEEB (if any) although i did look through the book in preparation several times. there seemed to be several problems (at least 5) where they give you a chart and you decipher the information out of it, that you could probably figure out even if you had never studied for a single second.
i was pleasantly surprised that the reference section not only gave equations, but detailed descriptions of what each variable meant and the units that were associated with it. they did not have anything nearly as useful as this when i took structures last december. this helped me answer a few problems without question. i even had a electricity cost question and the method of figuring it out was clearly stated in the reference section (they had given a bunch of extraneous information in the problem - but you could easily pick out the 2 numbers you had to multiply just by looking it up.)
the single thing i felt unprepared for were the questions that involved very specific light fixtures, i.e. what types of fixtures do not require a ballast, what kind of light pattern do types of fixtures make, what color light do certain fixtures give off etc. and they weren't giving you the easy answers like incandescent, but the lesser known other types of fixtures.
well good luck to everyone else - hope this helps.

Kelly, thanks for the synopsis. It helps to know that ME is not as hard as most people thought it would be. Beside MEEB, did you use the flashcard for this exam? If so, was it helpful? I will be taking ME in June, and I am studying the ALS Guide and the flashcard. Might take a peek at MEEB at the local library.

| ET, the flash cards and ALS were very useful. I flipped through MEEB, but not too much. A good resource is Graphic Standards chapters on MPE and Vertical transportation.

i was actually reviewing the flashcards on the train on the way to my exam this morning and i had a question on the exam that was one of the flashcards i had read like an hour before about task lighting.
plus i always find it helpful to shuffle the cards and try to answer questions out of context like they are when you are test-taking.

| Kelly, Mitch. Thanks for the pointers. Of all nine divisions, ME, GS, & LF bother me the most.

| people are saying to read MEEB front to back and focus on it. MEEB provides very detailed and in depth info and I would not recommed reading it front to back. Use the ALS books and when they talk and describe a system, look it up in MEEB to get more detail on it. Specifically look at the diagrams and know all the parts of a system, ie. show a picture of a specific boiler and points to a valve and asks what it's called. Know your light fixtures you may get a couple on that which are not in ALS, use MEEB.

to each his/her own....but I disagree with you.
a person taking this exam would be 10 times more knowledgeable and TRULY understand the concepts by reading MEEB, and therefore be MUCH better prepared.
it's not THAT hard of a read. I did it, and it was not bad at all.

MEEB 8th Ed. was my text book for Building Systems and Integration in college. Professor Kelso I need you!
It is THE book for architects to understand and apply MEP in their work. It even covers acoustics and lighting very well. I actually have a more design and structural focus in my practice and experience, so I find MEP foreign. MEEB can be lengthy and tedious, but one should definitely invest in a copy. You will be glad you did in practice and some wise person on this forum wrote that cross referencing study materials often cleared up vague concepts in another.
I have both the 8th and 9th editions

Took MEP this morning too. I found it very difficult, I am not sure if I passed. This was not the new exam, just the 105 quest multiple choice. I studied MEEB, Kaplan, I ask Mechanical engineers conceptual questions, used flash card. THe problem was that I knew the concepts pretty well, but I felt like i got caught up on the language of the test. Ive taken three so far and felt the same way after all of them (the last two I passed). Some of the questions were so specific about pieces of equipment that I had never seen or could not figure out from the illustrations. One question in particular, asked to identify the by name room who's ceiling fixture is on a dimmer, there was an electrical lighting plan for reference. The problem is that the plan was almost impossible to read because of the scale. Also, the answers did not correspond with the rooms listed on the plan. This made me really mad as I went through the exam.
My advice is to use Kaplan for concepts but you will need as more exposure to different system and types of equipment - use MEEB for this exposure. There was a question about what type of trap is used on a low flow floor drain.. There were quite a few questions about daylight design as well. That all I can remember... I really hope that i passed because I felt like i studied as much as I could, after all i am an Architect not a MEP engineer! Some if the question I thought would be out of the expectation of a normal Architect.
