I'm just back from MEP and I'd like to post some thoughts as long as they're still fresh:
About 50% is either common knowledge or basic but fundamental stuff that I learned from Kaplan or MEEB. I skimmed MEEB for the most part but went into depth on acoustics, lighting, fire and elevation.
About 30% was calculation (equations were provided), reading and interpreting diagrams and the last 20% was pure guessing (partially because of poor phrasing, partially because of unfamiliar subjects).
A few questions about indoor, inner city building air quality, filtering systems,
Know the parts of fire sprinkler heads, your different A/C systems (Do you know how to distinguish a multizone system from a dual duct system ? etc.)
Many questions regarding electrical service, some load calcs, (Does the GFCI trip when several appliances are running simultaneously).
The typical U & R value wall assembly calculcation question was there, too.
Know the elevator types and all the parts involved.
Know the different sprinkler systems and their use.
Lighting: Know all different lamps, their relative light output to each other, their typical use, color rendition.
One question about moving ramps (elevation difference in relationship to speed)
Hope that helps!

Got my pass letter over the weekend-
Next stop: BD/MM.
One more word of advice to all- Study the images and diagrams in MEEB- that book seems to be the bible for the test-makers!

Good Luck Steve!
Motivation is really a big thing in this exam- The field is so vast and that makes it difficult to grasp. But eventually, the test turned out to be not that bad- MEEB did it (although I never read longer sections in there- made me sleepy)
I'm now all over BD/MM- and in that subject, there's apparently not sufficient learning material- Nobody has yet found the holy grail of the test makers (like the MEEB is for the MEP).
I'll try to take it before the end of the month.

Thanks again for you input on ME/BD, I have already read through Archiflash and am trying to decide if I should read my Kaplan or just dive into MEEB. Your thoughts?
There is no holly grail for ME/BD. I found Archiflash to be my best "hard copy" study guide. I spent most of my time with the study guides and reading material on the FTP and used the internet to fill in the blanks. For what it is worth, here are my comments after passing ME/BD: http://www.areforum.org/forums/forum5/41569.html
Just like PD, ME/BD is more about experience than just reading a book. Therre are lots of post about people reading lots of books to learn how to detail buildings... in my opinion, if you have to read Ching to figure out what a mtl stud is or how to platform frame a house, then your internship wasn't very good.

Thanks for the advice-
As to Kaplan vs MEEB on MEP: ALS/ Kaplan is necessary to understand the concepts and to get some multiple choice questions exposure- it's pretty close to the real test in many ways (MEEB ist just too big a book to read through and has no practice trests), Archiflash covers the basics to get the vocabulary and definitions and MEEB is where the test makers take the graphics and pictures from. And take the NCARB test in the brochure available on their website.
If you are in a hurry, I'd first take the Kaplan tests at the end of each chapter - if you have less than 70% right- read the chapter- if you're better- move on. But that's only an emergency procedure. Formulas are normally given- but I'd get the basic ones memorized- like the one regarding the light on a horizontal surface.

Excellent, that is great advice. I think that is the route I am going to take.
I read all about vent stacks versus stack vents last night and it bored me to sleep.

MEEB has on-line practice quizzes for each chapter in the book - http://bcs.wiley.com/he-bcs/Books?action=index&itemId=0471465917&bcsId=2879
Even if you don't have the brick, uh, the book, the on-line quizzes and summaries are worth going through.

Another suggestion I found going through posts: "Heating, Cooling, Lighting" by Norbert Lechner. I got it and it lies somewhere between MEEB and Kaplan (leaning more towards MEEB). So far, if Kaplan doesn't go into enough detail and MEEB has too much, this book is invaluable. It's worth the investment.
