I've been taking the ALS mock exam and there are several questions from the NEC, such as placement of receptacles and limit of conductors in a raceway. My questions is how well do I need to study NEC? Is it even necessary?

In my opinion, no.
However, a candidate should have a rudimentary familiarity with electrical components used in buildings.
Particularly those affecting the architectural portions of the work.

On my test there were a couple questions about acceptable clearance dimensions (I can't post the questions, but I've seen them both posted by others in other threads on this board...) The answers to those can only be found in NEC. Doing a search for "NEC" and reading all the threads in which it appears might help you.
But I don't really think it's worth studying the whole code book to find the answers to 2 or 3 questions that you may or may not see. You'd have to memorize way too many facts to guess at the few things that come up on the test.Last edited on Wed May 14th, 2008 05:44 pm by BetterMousetrap

thanks to both of you. since I won't have time to study the entire code, I just have to rely on what I've learned on the job. I doubt it's enough but it will have to do.
