Does anyone know how to solve this calculation question from the 4.0 study guide:
During a 24-hour period, the average outdoor temp is 48F and the house is maintained at 70F. How many gallons of heating oil will the house use during that period if the furance yields 98,000 Btu for each gallon burned?

GOOD QUESTION! I don't see how they solve it either. My instinct tells me we are missing information such as the heat loss (or insulation value) of the house, as well as internal heating loads like lights, people, appliances, etc.
I tried working back from their answer, nothing seemed to connect.
Then I noticed the metric units - they don't match the foot-inch units! 1 watt = 3.41 BTU/h so 28.7 kW = 98,000 BTU/h not BTU. It may seem nitpicky, but that's an important detail.
Do we have a case of both having incorrect numbers given to us, as well as lacking key information?
Any hope of NCARB publishing an errata?

This is exactly the reason to avoid MEP, GS or LF in ARE 4.0! fill-in the blanks!
I saw that as well and had no clue how to solve it, and felt like there was critical information lacking.
I'll be watching this post to see if someone else can figure it out, but don't fret, as questions like (fill-in-the black) this will not be on your exam in 3.1...

If it was only so easy to solve such an open ended question. Let see. What if all the walls were glass... what if the average R-value is 100. What if there are hot computers running all day. How big is this house??? 5 sqft... 25000 sqft.???? Does the house have a direct gain passive heating system with a thermal mass??? Is it cloudy outside... what is the house alignment, what is the clearness number, is it sealed completely... are there cracks?
Coming from a Chemical Engineering background... these types of questions scare me.
Like if the outside temp. is 98.6 degree you have no heat loss... yeah only if you are dead and are generating no heat. Or the condenser is the hottest part of the Refrig cycle... so some how it gains heat from the compresser to the condenser??? PV=nRT... law of thermodynamics man. All change in temps. comes from the change in pressure.

I just heard back from in inquiry to NCARB - a curious answer. It makes me wonder who writes the exams and study guides.
Comment or Question:
A number of ARE candidates have found errors in example questions posted in the NCARB study aids. I have specifically noticed: Building Systems Q2 does not contain enough information to solve. and Structural Systems Q15 and Q31 both have incorrect answers given in the guide. Who should these concerns be addressed to? Will errata on the study guides be published? Thank you, [xcentric]
Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We received the sample items from Prometric. I have contacted the committee members to check these items out. We will change them or the answer as necessary.

Wow, fast response! Kekku just emailed me again to let me know that corrected study guides have been posted to the webpage.
I checked them and on the three questions, all were correct except SS#15 which has the correct answer in metric, but not inches. I replied with the correction, so hopefully that one will be fixed soon as well.

No need to rack your brain! The NCARB answer was wrong and they have fixed it.
The updated question is MUCH EASIER!
Check that you have the updated versions of the other two questions I cited so that you don't lose sleep over those either. They will be on the test - as near as I can tell from NCARB's response, the study guide questions come from Prometric's bank of questions.
