Ok now I can breath a little. This is my second go at this test and hopefully my last. My overall feeling after the test this time is an ok one. I feel like I should of passed, but only time will tell. There were a few off the wall questions, and some really crude drawings that look nothing like what they are discussing
Types of questions I had:
Identify HVAC componets
Pick best HVAC system (read question carefully - Cost or other criteria may not apply)
Identify parts of fire sprinkler head
Site orentiation/ advantages for solar gain
Basic electrical calcs
Basic BTU calcs
Know definitions and terms
Identify parts of active solar system
Calc for STC rating
Calc for U value
And just a bunch of general knowledge questions.
Now its a waiting game..

| I'm taking the exam on Tuesday and wanted to know if the testing format was different than the other multiple choice tests? My understanding is that this test is now a fill in the blank exam? What was the question format like?

There was a thread a few weeks back that discussed the AIT question issue. It seems that NCARB conducted a trial of the questions on the ME exams last summer, but that they aren't showing up on tests now. Not sure exactly why they've been discontinued...
The format is still 105 questions in 2 hours. Good luck!

i just took the test 5.17.2008 and the only thing i can say is that im nervous cuz i felt like it was too easy. eeek! the hardest part was trying to decypher the effin diagrams i swear they draw them on purpose to make you look like an idiot staring at the screen. the two tests that i have taken so far take what should a simple light fixture or HVAC system and turn them into things that require indiana jones to uncode their mystery. any way i say cover as much material as you can and you will be well prepared. MEEB, kaplan, archiflash, ballast, FTP that is what i did cross your fingers.

Yea I remember those fill in the blank questioins. That was when I took this test the 1st time. Those sample questions were not very nice. Glad they still have not showed up. I think if they do we should be allowed some phone a friend life lines lol..
Only good part about those sample questions was getting a check in the mail from ncarb for participating in them.

The key to this thread is what version you are taking. Version 4.0 began on the 15th of May. If you have passed just one exam before that date you have till July 09 to finish all exams on the 3.1 format.

I just took it today. Feel like it went okay. I was aware of the change over to 4.0 last week for those who hadn't passed a 3.1 exam, but I only have 3 left (hopefully 2 now) to take under the 3.1. Now I'm on to PD!
Man am I glad I didn't have any of the fill-in-the-blank questions. I feel sorry for the ladies and gents starting to take the M&E Sysm. in 4.0.

What type of calc questions are asked on the ME exam and what reference would be the best to study for them?
Thanks for the help.

Im sorry to be the one who asks, but to what extent are we talking about when you say "Identify parts of active solar system"? Is there any way possible to be more specific on what topics to focus on? If you had to retake the same exam, what would you study to properly respond to the "solar system" question....
Thanks for any help you may provide..

I got my pass letter yesterday.
My test was on par with most of what I have read on the forum. I can honestly say that this, by far, was the one I thought I had failed. The questions are so vague and the material so broad I wasn't sure where to begin.
Having said that, I wouldn't worry to much about the test. If you read through Kaplen, ALS, MEEB and understand/recognize the diagrams, you should be good. I really believe this is mainly was you are being tested on (why would we, as Architects, need to know the parts of a fire sprinkler head?)

Congrats on the Success!!!
For us folk who are still trying to get the level you are...whats the chance you can help a fellow out.... Several people have stressed how important the diagrams...but nobady (that Ive seen) has been so inclined to mention which ones. Typical of MEEB, there are thousands of Diagrams....and Id hate to waste time on diagrams that are irrelevant.
If you can just summarize at lease which diagrams to focus on, this would be such a tremendous help for us....
I can start the list....1. Psychrometric, ....

I spent most of my time studying the diagrams in chapter 10 starting on page 387. (I have the 10th edition of MEEB). There are 9 different diagrams in this area along with explanations of how they operate and what their advantages and disadvantages are. I would also recommend becoming very good at heat pump systems, how they work and their parts. Make sure you understand how an AC system works and which side the cooling takes place.
Daylighting and solar are good things to study. I believe that as we focus more on sustainability, the test become more focused on these areas.
If I think of more focused areas I will respond to this thread.
All in all I would say don't get to caught up in the finite details. Just make sure you understand the concepts and the basic systems. (except for those damn sprinkler head parts. I will never understand that one)
Good Luck

Ok great....thanks a lot for that, finally something more specific then "all diagrams"....ha.
When you say heat pump, are you refering to the refridgerant cycle of the A/C (Expansion/Compression/Evaporation of Heat)....In my readings, Ive noticed they've (MEEB) used heat pump in a variety of applications....so when you say heat pump, it doesnt pin down anything exact except for what I "think" it means as mentioned above.

| A heat pump is a type of AC system, but it works differently in that it can supply both heating and cooling to a building (although depending on the climate the system may require a backup furnace for the really cold days). Basically you have an AC system that can be reversed. If you look it up in the MEEB book there is quite a bit of information.
