This is my third.... yes, third attempt. The first attempt was a joke because I just didn't bother to study hoping that my practical expereince would get me through...wrong!
In my second attempt, I relied on ALS study materials and flashcards and didn't understand any concepts..... I was simply trying to cram ALS material into short term memory.
This time I spend the last 5 weeks studying concepts, calculations, and diagrams from Kaplan, ALS, Meeb, ASC, and Ching. I separated all the parts into a large 3 ring binder and didn't move onto the next area of study until I at least thought I understood the concepts. With all that said...here goes:
My exam was heavy on electrical, lighting and passive systems. Nothing on acoustics, very little on plumbing and HVAC. I had 5 WTF Canadian code questions that I had to guess the answer. I had 7 calculations which were very straight forward except on electrical power that was worded in a confusing way. I spent a lot of time on how to perform calculations and memorize formulas. DON'T DO THAT! All the formulas are in the reference section and the actual calculations are straight forward. I also had some plumbing calcs. I also had at least 15 diagrams to identify parts or what it actually was. 3 History questions regarding buildings.
One thing that was not cool. When I arrived at the testing center I was told that I could NOT use my calculator because an on screen calculator was available. I COULD NOT FIND THE ON SCREEN CALCULATOR!!!. I told the test center person and they said they were sorry, but I could not use my calculator. They put in a call to Prometrics Help Desk but never received a return call. With 30 minutes left, I told them that I needed a calculator or I might fail the exam. With 15 minutes remaining and 7 calculations questions still unanswered, they finally allowed me to use "their" creepy little calculator. They are filing a complaint to Prometrics on my behalf.
The tally: 57 questions that I knew, 19 maybe's, 29 guesses. So even after all the studying and preparation, I still feel like crap coming out of the exam. I really thought I had a good grasp on the stuff this time.... but I really don't feel very good about it once again.... it will be a miracle if I passed ....damn.
This has to be the ugliest exam of them all!!!! So.... now I wait to get the news....

| Thanks. I would at least skim MEEB for the diagrams. Good luck on your exam!
