Ok, so I'll admit it that I'm not the best when it comes to the history stuff. Everyone seems to talk about a history quesiton, but after a quick search, couldnt find anything in the forum. Any guidence on areas to review before this test?

They sprinkle a few history questions throughout the multiple choice exams. The questions rarely relate to the particular section you're taking.

The quantity of questions (typically 0 to 3 per exam) is so insignificant that many don't bother with extra studying for history and just rely on memory from school and life experience.

If you feel you need some basic knowledge, just find a website that discusses the various movements & styles through history and note the names and key buildings. Somewhere in past threads you'll find some good links. Check out the FTP too.

BlewBe, Since I cant remember off the top of my head...there are study material on the Forum's ME FTP.

I know this is a broadbrush....but one of them have several key points of possible history questions...near the end.

Only a few that come to mind are....Pantheon (Light), Roman AquaDuct (Water Supply), Palladio (Ventilation)....and thats all I can think of for now. When I get back my study material back...I see which one and try to post it for your use.

A couple extra to be noted are Corbusier's Notre Dame at Ron Champ (Lighting), Common Gothic Architecture (Fan Window), and a Greek Theaters (Acoustical Problem)....

Thats about all the info Ive found. Hope this helps. If you get the history book and find any more major ones, your contribution would be much appreciated.

LibraLogic, thanks for directing me to the FTP! I found the "list" at the end of one of the posts, although some of them I'm not sure make complete sense. I think its suppose to be Fan Vaulting (ventilation) and Rose Windows (lighting) for Gothic architecture. And from what I can find... the Greek theaters were considered to be great at acoustics, so I'm not sure what the "problem" would be ?? Do you know??

Anyway... I think the list is sufficient without adding another (IMHO unnessissary) resource.

BTW- I actually knew all of the references listed

Well hats off to you, I cant say that my memory serves me as well as yours. Your clarifications actually helped some of my search results come up with much better results...

In any case, whether (IMHO) or not, if you can think of any other ones or come across additional hoistoric notables....please share for the rest of us. As the info I provided above (even though not exactly accurate) exausted my resources.

Thanks...and when do you test?

I guess I faulter more with the "which building by what architect does this neat new feature" type questions.

On the NCARB practice test, there is a Frank Loyld Wright building that introduced natural lighting by means of an atrium. I understand the concepts, I'm just not good at remembering what building (or who) introduced it. I'm sure at some point in college I had them all memorized, but it probably left my brain as I walked the stage. :P (I guess this falls in the same category as why I can remember why I know a person, but not their name).

I test on Monday (June 30). Not sure if I'm ready, but after about 6 weeks of studying I'm giving up. At this point I'm going in circles because there is too much information to cover and I figure I know it or I dont. I felt like this before MM and did okay, so I'm hoping for the same. These tests are 85% luck and testing skills anyway. But I'll be sure to let you know how it goes. ;)

Ah ok, mine is the following Monday after yours, July 7th, so believe me Im feeling the pressure too. Especially since I dont have Kaplan/ALS, or any of the other recommended books except I DO have the MEEB 9th ed./ArchiFlash/Chings Bldg Const Illustrated/ the NOTES from Kaplan/Ballasts from the Forums FTP (which was helpful as a GUIDE of what to study), and the feedback from the post-test takers. Ive also ordered (not received yet) the Kaplan ME Test Bank CD...for practice.

I hope those will be enough, Ive probably contributed about 45 hours starting June 6th to date....and plan on totaling 75-80 hrs by test date. What are your resources/time frame?

In additional to our list Frank Wright also has a building as I remember reading through MEEB, who uses a type of trombe wall (made of stone) as part of the passive air conditioning. The building is curved, with the acute angle facing south...(probably side of which the trombe exists).

paternosters - the predecessor to the elevator

Paternosters are open-faced, continuously moving lifts that go to each floor like a huge ferris wheel. Safety concerns have reduced paternosters to near obscurity.

Cloaca Maxima

The Cloaca Maxima was one of the world's earliest sewage systems. Constructed in ancient Rome in order to drain local marshes and remove the waste of one of the world's most populous cities, it carried an effluent to the River Tiber, which ran beside the city.

Hey thanks Spokes....I think we all can appreciate/benefit from the sharing of information here...

There are a couple history questions that I cannot seem to pin down from a recent post....

1. Acoustics of the pantheon

2. 'Windows' in the bathhouses of Ancient Rome

Has anybody seen or know of the characteristics and their value in history would be in those buildings? Anything helps...

I searched this out the other day...I remember reading somewhere that clerestory windows were used to light bathhouses.

My research shows that the ceiling of the Pantheon is a type of cavity absorber and it was an early and advanced solution to crate a good sound environment.

Most of the history questions on my test were straight out of the MEEB book.  If you skim over the images in MEEB and image text that's all you will have to know.

I know Ive seen more than a couple FLLW buildings used as examples for daylighting....is this the chapters you're refering to?

Thanks for your help....when did you test?

ONE question on history - forget about it (not to be so down about it).
I read up on all the "history" question possibilities on this forum, which was great, but then my question was out of the blue. hell, i dont even remember who/what apart from something about geothermal something. eeks. from the 16th century.

I tested in Feb 07.  I only had about 3 history questions and they were all images straight out of MEEB.  I also had additional images out of MEEB that where diagrams and key notes.  I loaned out my book so I can't tell you which chapters they were in.  I would recommend you know everything else before you really worry about history questions.
