thanks again EricB.

it' still early in the day and I'm stuck at a point just being confused with all the caculations

I honestly don't think I can remember all these stuff understanding the concept is easy but understanding them in engineering written books is JUST HARD!!!!

That's right. This is actually a very famous post, it's one of the first by the now Forum famed Eric B. This post will go down in ARE Forum folklore -no question.

And who knows, maybe Eric B will become famous like Luis Kahn or somebody and there will be excerpts from his posts on ARE forum in books on his work. If his contribution to ARE forum is any indication, Eric B could become a very famous architect someday.

I feel the same way.  I've taken it twice already, is all I have left, and felt I couldn't study more.  Yet the questions had NOTHING to do with what I studied.  I aced all the ALS quizzes and final examinations, even the computer mock exams.  And still it lingers as the only one I had to take more thantwice.

Great posts!  This will be my next exam.  It seems like a mountain of highly technical stuff to digest.  After failing BP recently I'm gonna buckle down and study hard for this one.   Thanks for all the tips.

You have captured exactly how I have felt all week.  If only I could download MEEB into my brain like they did in the Matrix!

New to forum...in case you didn't get answer...Statue was refurbished because of some structural issue with her raised arm and the lantern she holds. They also wanted to clean off the dark brown tarnish that arose from years of acid rain and seagull crap.  It then underwent further refurbishing whe it was realized that stains returned and that it was due the workmen peeing off the scaffolding onto the face of our beloved harbor protectress....nice huh ? Guess I wouldn't want to climb down to take a pee either...a lot of stairs  to navigate...let alone while doing the pee pee dance....later!

I took the MEP exam Nov. 05 and failed.  My first ARE exam and I was devastated after taking the exam.  I know now after finally getting on the ARE Forum that I was not alone.  I also know why I was not prepared enough.  I did not use MEEB nearly enough, I did not know what to expect from the exam, and I almost passed based on the ARCHiflash cards and Kaplan Guides alone.  Out of 7 sections, I passed 4 and only had one section considered “less than competent”.  I feel that I can pass all 7 sections of the exam now if I study hard enough.

Just reading this thread gave me a new hope towards taking my exams.  I’ve set a date this month and I have now started studying again after an entire year.

If anyone is bitter about their exam results or the exam format, I’m glad you are reading this because you are NOT alone.  My confidence level was severely bruised and it’s taken me just over a year to get passed it.  I finally found the forum and I feel I am back on track.  Thanks to all who post here and contribute to the most valuable resource for the ARE!;)

There are numerous sources listed on the Books tab above.  Here is a picture of the book.  It's HUGE and full of information.  Everyone tells me that if you read KAPLAN, scan through the MEEB book, and use the flash cards, you'll be adequately prepared.  I disagree.  Those people are just good at formalized testing.  I say you should read through the key chapters of MEEB at least, not scan through it.

I just completed my exam for MEP tonight.  Boy, was I in for a ride.  I studied Kaplan, did all the Q&As, ALS, and taking seminar and was comfortable to take the exam.  I walked alway feeling discourage based on majority of questions that never was in any of the study materials mentioned above.  I'm hoping that I will find some helpful tips on this forum.

I was the exact same way except I would not describe myself as "discouraged", more like "outraged" at the time!  I don't mind they long hours of studying if the material I study is actually on the exam.  I could pass it easily if that were the case.

The best way to prepare for the exam from what others have told me and from what I've read is take your time and re-read material you have covered.  That way, you'll truely understand it and learn it well.  Also read multiple sources.  The MEEB book mentioned above contains graphics and charts that are most vital.  The KAPLAN guides are not the only source.  Multiple sources are required.

I used KAPLAN, Archiflash, and parts of the MEEB book and I still failed the first time.  Looking back, I breezed through the material too fast and was simply overloaded during the exam.  If I would have relaxed more and taken a few more days of dilligent studying, I probably would have passed.  I only failed by a small margin.

Good luck with your exams.  I take the MEP again at the end of the month.

Thanks for the topics to research.  I am using ALS, this Forum and a little MEEB.

I find that taking a lot of practice test helps me.  Its the think quick, trust your intuition thing that I think got me through the three I have passed so far.

I followed a thread on the web and came up with a good definition on displacement ventilation.  Interesting that it "is" almostly exactly what the term describes.

Also mentioned - photovoltaic installation.  The Florida Solar Energy website has the greatest illustrations and history of how this works.  I am embarassed to say I grew up about 20 minutes from there and I got a whole new education on PV systems here from my comfy computer chair.  Unfortunatley I don't have time for a field trip now!

Can you post the links to your web searchs? I read that displacement ventilation is the use of an above ceiling or below floor plenum, what did you find?

OUT STANDING
Thanks alot
I just took Gen Str - Failed
and I just took Lateral Forces - Passed

STRUCTERS THIS ROUND IS THE FULL BLOWN VERSION - MY ADVISE TO ANY ONE TAKING IT IS TO WAIT 6 MO
FORCES WAS A CAKE WALK - DO IT NOW
TAKE FORCES FIRST FEEL GOOD ABOUT YOURSELF AND THEN REALLY BUTTON DOWN FOR GS. I COUNTED ABOUT 20 FORMULAS MEMORIZED 300 QUESTIONS OF THAT 300 ONLY 5 WERE ASKED - MY FRIEND TOOK IT A FEW YEARS AGO AND SAID HE HAD ONY 3 FORMULA QUESTIONS AND SKIPPED THEM AND HE STILL PASSED.

CLEARLY THE ARE IS NOT TO TEST US TO SEE IF WE ARE COMPITENT ARCHITECTS BUT SIMPLE A MEANS TO PUT A GOVENOR ON HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE ADMITTED INTO AN ALLREADY OVERPOPULATED AND UNDERPAID GROUP OF PROFESSIONALS.

I STILL LOVE WHAT I DO - SO I PUT UP WITH IT

LIFE IS SO UNFAIR - I REALLY DO WISH THE TEST WERE USEFULL IN ASSESSING OUR ABILITIES AS ARCHITECTS. I CANT TELL YOU - (IN SPITE OF THIS TEST) - HOW MANY REGISTERED ARCHITS I KNOW WHO ARE COMPLETE NO NOTHING WASTES OF SKIN

ANY WAY GOOD LUCK

Eric-

What you said is exactly what everyone has said about this exam. I am about to take it and am a bit daunted by the amount of information to digest. The probelm is how broad it is and how specific it can get. I guess I am going to start with ALS as a guide and look into other books when I am going thru the ALS topics.

Generally people seem a bit lost on this one and it seems tought to take it on yourself. Would you recommend a study partner?

Well I Just passed Mech-Elec and I was very concerned about it at first. This Forum put a scare in me so I hit the books pretty hard - Archiflash - seminar Cd memorized it, mead read lightly - I did read it but I will guess I felt like only about 10% stuck in my head. And the Graphic standards sections on MPE read that twice. I walled out feeling like I passed - But I know that those feeling can be wrong so I stressed out until I received my letter in the mail PASS - whhew. now on to CD's. when will this end...

Hello Eric,

I would like to hear more about your experiences.  I am going to take the test at the end of the year and they have changed the exam a bit in California.  Do you know if your test is different than other states?

Eric- If you performed as well as you applied a synopsis of this exam, you had to have passed. This is my next exam an this was a terrific precursor to what to expect. When it comes to MEEB, it would be fabulous to have a photographic memory!

Though our firm has engineers on staff, their main office is 3 hours away from my branch office. I am relying on my study materials (I found a few on your list I didn't have) but also (for anyone who has real live engineers in their office, no matter how old and crotchety, ask them questions- you would not believe how helpful some of these guys can be when you are truly interested in what they are) engineers at my previous employer. I had a great relationship with many of them and have found their insights to help reinforce what I am reading in the books.

Thanks for taking the time to write your thoughts!

wow - i'm TOTALLY using your post as my guide for my ME test.

But check it - I'm scheduling mine for May 14th, the day before the cutoff of being forced to take 4.0. Its make it or break it for me. If I pass, I stay in 3.1. If I fail, I'm automatically shifted to 4.0 and wasted only one exam, of which I just pay 35 bucks to retake (right?)

And then I have until June of '09 to pass the remaining 8 in 3.1 or they eradicate all my tests and I start from scratch in 4.0. (very scary thought...)

Do you guys think this is a good idea, or should I just say screw it all and take 4.0 from the jump?

I want to take 3.1 because I have mostly all the study mtrls, methodologies, and misc. items associated with it already. (mostly from friends and my office)

The timing wasn't the best, but I TOTALLY blame ncarb for elongating the process of getting my record straightened and to the state board. (all of 2 yrs of frantic, angry phone calls, emails, and yes - even snail mail)

wrong - you have to pay the full price for taking the test again (the $35 is if you reschedule the exam)

correct, if you pass ME, then you have until June 2009 to finish 3.1
Do you guys think this is a good idea, or should I just say screw it all and take 4.0 from the jump?
you'd only have 7 exams if you waited a month...
